Architektenhütte Allgäu

You get the best view from high up! The Architektenhütte (Architect’s Lodge) not only sits high up on a steep slope in the Allgäu Alps; in addition, the living area has been laid out under the roof and thus offers the best view of the surrounding mountains and the Iller valley.

The three-storey wooden building, situated in a hamlet adjacent to the Nagelfluhkette Nature Park, reinterprets the local traditional architecture in a modern form. With its straight-lined, austere design, the building looks almost like an alp, if it weren’t for the windows—especially the all-round ribbon window below the widely projecting roof indicates the residential use.

The interior too is functional and unpretentious. Walls and ceilings are left in their (refined) shell condition. The bedrooms are designed as small chambers with enough space for a double bed and a wardrobe. Two bedrooms each share a simple bathroom. In order to have a pleasant and healthy indoor climate even when the house is fully occupied and not permanently aired, breathable wool felt curtains replace conventional doors.

Unlike the small bedrooms located on the first two floors, the lounge under the roof is characterised by a generous ambience, which is further intensified by views in all four cardinal directions. A bench manufactured by the local carpenter extends along the entire long side and merges at the front sides into a cupboard area with kitchenette respectively a lounge corner on the opposite side. The entire interior design is plain and limited to the bare essentials. Instead of pictures on the walls, there are magnificent representations of nature when looking out of the windows.

What to do

Allgäu Alps/Grünten: skiing, tobogganing, hiking, mountaineering, climbing, mountain biking, paragliding. Alpsee/Allgäu lakeland: sailing + swimming, water skiing, paddling, fishing. Iller/Iller valley: cycling, rafting, canoeing, fishing, golf, nature experience. Immenstadt/Sonthofen/Oberstdorf/Kempten: culture, events, sightseeing, wellness, shopping.

Why we like this house

The reinterpretation of a mountain hut: modern wooden architecture with great emphasis on sustainability and minimalism instead of rustic Alpine chic.

This house is great for

… nature lovers who appreciate minimalist design; groups, holidays with friends, families (children aged 7 and older)

Sustainability

Getting there without a car: Blaichach railway station is on the railway line to Oberstdorf. Distance to the house approx. 1.0 km.
