On the banks of a small pond, set slightly apart from the historic farm complex, stands the “Backhäusle” in the heart of the Black Forest. For decades, it served as a functional outbuilding for baking bread. Today, it is a listed building, along with the other structures of the Sägehof dating from 1697 – the residential building, the granary and the mill.
The conversion of the bakehouse into a holiday home preserves its clear, minimalist form and translates the compact typology into an open-plan living space: on the ground floor, a continuous space for cooking, dining and relaxing; above, a secluded sleeping area under the roof, connected via a walkway to a seating area with a panoramic window. The interior layout makes use of the room’s height and creates a surprising sense of spaciousness despite the small floor area. Visual connections between the levels, as well as carefully placed openings to the outdoors, link the interior and exterior spaces. The materiality remains deliberately simple and ties in with the original construction. Existing elements and new fixtures enter into a dialogue with a calm, natural ease.
Outside, a spacious terrace extends right up to the pond, with a jetty leading directly into the water. In this way, the house enters into a direct dialogue with the extensive grounds and the surrounding meadows and woods. The location in the Gutachtal valley, with its rolling low-mountain landscape, invites visitors to enjoy wonderful walks in all directions.
The Sägehof is situated in Reichenbach, a district of the town of Hornberg, at an altitude of 780 metres. The owner’s family has been running a dairy farm for generations. The barn is located slightly above the farm and can be reached on foot in a few minutes. Guests are invited to experience everyday life on the farm – from guided tours and tractor rides to helping out in the barn. Milk, eggs and homemade produce can be purchased directly on site.
What to do
Hiking, climbing, Nordic walking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. A visit to Hornberg with its Schlossberg hill and castle ruins, the viaduct and the Black Forest Railway, as well as the Duravit Design Centre and the open-air theatre. Trips to the Gutach summer toboggan run and the Triberg Waterfalls, city breaks to Freiburg and Strasbourg, or a day trip to Lake Constance
Why we like this house
A listed bakehouse right by the water, which has been seamlessly adapted to modern times whilst preserving the character of the location.
This house is great for
Couples, families, solo travellers; in the courtyard there is also another holiday home in the granary and a holiday flat in the family’s main house. Also suitable for family gatherings or small seminars.
Sustainability
Preservation and reuse of the existing building fabric, as well as restoration using regional, organic materials. Heat generated by biomass – waste wood from the family’s own forest.
