Island houses Fehmarn: 36 Berta and 36 Charly

The two holiday homes Berta and Charly form part of a small group of buildings on the Baltic island of Fehmarn. Frank and Susanne Plehn – the owners of a Hamburg architectural office – have supplemented an island-style farmhouse from 1934 with two new timber buildings: a long house (replacing the old barn) and a house in cubic form.

Berta is located in the rear part of the long house, which consists of two individual buildings. Its dark grey façade is accentuated by its connecting buildings of larch wood. On the ground floor you will find the bedrooms (3 double and 2 single), 2 bathrooms and a sauna. The living room with a fireplace and access to the terrace is completely glazed on both gables and offers beautiful views across the surrounding fields to the Baltic Sea.

Charly’s cubic shape differs from the traditional architecture of the village. It nonetheless forms a harmonious duet with the neighbouring long house thanks to its larch wood façade. The ground floor features a bright living, dining and cooking area complete with a fireplace. The two bedrooms and the sauna on the first floor allow access to the balcony and offer broad views out to the Baltic Sea.

What to do

The natural beach is only 900m away, other beaches are within easy reach. Both homes are an ideal starting point for surfers, kites, bikers, riders, divers and anglers. Burg, Fehmarn’s main centre with a beautiful old town, is only 4km away. The surrounding neighbourhood also has a local farm shop with its own café.
