Bleibe Menzenschwand

Raised on the slope on concrete supports, yellow window frames and an unconventional roof: Bleibe Menzenschwand demonstrates the courage to be individual. The holiday home sits on a steep western slope in Menzenschwand, a district of St. Blasien in the southern Black Forest. The wooden building, erected on a stepped concrete slab, has a roof that is rotated through 45 degrees and extends down at the sides. This could be understood as an allusion to the traditional Black Forest houses, which have roofs that are pulled down on the sides to protect against wind and weather.
The roof not only characterises the exterior appearance, but also the way the interiors are perceived: almost every room has a sloping ceiling. The house extends over six levels: from the entrance level in the middle (with bedroom and bathroom), a few steps lead down to the kitchen and dining area, and from there further down to the living area. Going upstairs, you first reach a small gallery and further up another double bedroom (with gallery), a children’s room and the bathroom with sauna.
Panoramic windows and the large balcony afford expansive views of the surrounding area. In addition, the flowing sequences of rooms create views throughout the entire house. The bright yellow used for the entrance door and window frames is taken up inside and is accompanied by pink and various shades of green. The colour concept was conceived by the architects – as were the interior furnishings, the majority of which are customised built-in pieces.

What to do

Numerous hikes or mountain bike tours start directly in the village. The Radon Revitalbad mineral water swimming pool is within walking distance. In winter: alpine skiing (19 ski runs of over 30 km), there are also many cross-country skiing trails in Menzenschwand and the surrounding area.
The central location in the Southern Black Forest Nature Park and in the tri-border region offers many excursion destinations. Nature experiences in the immediate vicinity: Feldberg, Wutach Gorge, Lake Schluchsee, Lake Titisee and Germany’s largest natural waterfall in Todtnau. Day trips: Rhine Falls in Schaffhausen, Lake Constance, Alsace, Kaiserstuhl, Basel, Zurich or Lucerne are within easy reach. Amusement parks: Europa-Park Rust, Steinwasen Park and the Hasenhorn Coaster in Todtnau.

Sustainability

Getting there without a car: International Upper Rhine Route Frankfurt - Basel, to Freiburg, with the suburban train to Seebrugg. From there a bus service operates to Menzenschwand via St. Blasien bus station.
