The traditional Bühelwirt hotel in Sankt Jakob in the Ahrntal valley of South Tyrol has been extended with a modern wing containing 20 suites, a restaurant and wellness area. The new building is at once radical in its simplicity and visually spectacular; it is both contemporary and deeply connected to age-old local traditions. From its position on the slope, the building allows access to the main building via a bridge. With its deep, asymmetrical saddle roof it is considerate of the old building, robbing it of neither the sunshine nor its glorious views. The facade and roof of the new building were maximally expanded to the south and east sides. Loggias with bay windows positioned at oblique angles break up its black facade. The simplicity and clarity of the architecture continues within the interior spaces: the rooms and suites are pared back to the essentials. The use of local materials, such as the floors and furniture of larch wood and loden cloth, references the architectural traditions of the region. Above all else, however, these simple yet homely rooms place the view of the mountains centre stage.

Owner
Their paths crossed as early as their school days. Michaela is studying business administration, Matthias works as a bank clerk. Michaela takes over the "old lady", the Bühelwirt, from her grandparents and is given a free hand. It quickly becomes clear that the old house needs a change. Matthias gets enthusiastic and joins the Weiberwirtschaft. Together, Michaela and Matthias Haller rock the business and three children. Today they are living their dream of an organic hotel.
