Far removed from the mass tourism crowds, the Casa Penya Rotja enjoys a rural location in the agricultural east of Mallorca. This property, which comprises two houses, is surrounded by a large garden with almond, orange and olive trees and agaves. The former barn was transformed in several stages – beginning with the conversion by architect Antonio Estéva in the 1980s – its modernisation ensuring a fine feel for quality without losing the building’s authentic character. The house blends harmoniously with its natural surroundings: outdoor terraces and verandas provide plenty of places to sit, offering a variety of views over the garden to the rooftops of the small town of Son Servera and across rolling hills.
The heart of the house is the bright living room, which opens onto the garden on two sides. An old Mallorcan double timper door contrasted with a modern glass door creates an interplay between inside and out. The interior flows out onto the sunny terrace on one side and the peaceful, shady veranda on the other. Inside, an open kitchen with dining area and a small bedroom adjoin the living room. The second, large bedroom, complete with a roof terrace is located on the first floor. There are two further bedrooms in the outbuilding. The interiors are characterised by a dialogue between classic modernity and traditional craftmanship, between the building’s historic structure and the carefully selected furniture pieces, between playfulness and straight-lined simplicity.
What to do
There are many opportunities for hiking, cycling and day trips to the nearby beaches and national parks. Palma can be reached in about 50 minutes by car, the beautiful village of Arta within 15 minutes, and the golf courses Pula Golf and Servera Golf within 5 minutes.
Why we like this house
An authentic Mallorcan country house with a great deal of personality.
This house is great for
Anyone in search of peace and nature. Casa Penya Rotja is ideal for two small families planning to spend holidays together, as the rooms are spread over two buildings.
