Tetenbüllspieker

Wasserkoog is considered one of the most beautiful villages on the Eiderstedt peninsula. There are old farmhouses surrounded by the typical North Frisian landscape with meadows, pastures and a wide horizon. And on the dike on the edge of the village you will find a residence that combines the flair of a historic thatched house with modern design.

Architektenhütte Allgäu

You get the best view from high up! The Architektenhütte (Architect’s Lodge) not only sits high up on a steep slope in the Allgäu Alps; in addition, the living area has been laid out under the roof and thus offers the best view of the surrounding mountains and the Iller valley.   The three-storey wooden building, situated in a hamlet adjacent to the Nagelfluhkette Nature Park, reinterprets the local traditional architecture in a modern form. With its straight-lined, austere design, the building looks almost like an alp…

Casa2020

Staying at Casa2020 means spending your holiday in a former monastery— at Convento das Bernardas in the coastal town of Tavira in the Portuguese Algarve. The Pritzker Prize winner Eduardo Souto de Moura converted the more than 500-year-old monument, built in late Gothic style, into an apartment complex. The holiday apartment in the west wing of the building ensemble is accessed via the impressive inner courtyard with saltwater pool.

Region/Town: PT – Portugal, Algarve, Tavira

Scenery: Just a few minutes walk from the old town, near the river Gilão and the salt lakes

Freiform

Below the village of Verdings, architect Martin Gruber has planned an organic free form next to his own farmstead, which will be rented out as an extraordinary guest house. Like a nature observatory in the midst of the South Tyrolean mountains, the contemporary glass pavilion affords a captivating view across the valley. The design absorbs the topography of its immediate surroundings with its glass envelope and blurs the boundaries between nature and building.

Region/Town: IT – Italy, South Tyrol, Verdings

Scenery: Nestled in nature on the estate of an organic farm

A Casa de Aldán & Apartamentos Ardora

Overlooking the harbour, the A Casa de Aldán Hotel is situated in the fishing village of Aldán on the west coast of Galicia. Architect Alfonso Penela has created a building from the ruins of an old salting factory, which preserves the history of the place and at the same time radiates modernity. The reduction to a few materials—raw stone is combined with smooth cedar wood, glass and zinc—creates a calm, timeless ambience. Those who prefer to stay in an apartment will love the zinc-covered Ardora Apartments close to a beach that can be reached via private stairs.

Region/Town: ES – Spain, Galicia, Aldán

Das Dellacher

Haus Dellacher is considered one of the most important architectural monuments in Austria. The building is an early work of the Austrian-American architect Raimund Abraham, who achieved international renown, particularly through the construction of the Austrian Cultural Forum in New York. Raimund Abraham designed the house in the Burgenland in the 1960s for his friend, the photographer Max Dellacher. It was vacant for over 20 years until architect Johannes Handler saved it from decay in 2015 and restored it true to the original. It is open to the public not only for architectural tours, but can now also be booked for overnight stays.

Zum Egle 1336

Concrete and the Middle Ages! Zum Egle 1336 is a B&B with two rooms in the historic old town of Constance. Opening up instead of covering up was the maxim of the building’s renovation. Traces of the past were meticulously uncovered and put on display. For example, the raw walls of the two guest rooms show remains of old floral wallpaper and medieval murals with images of saints and banners.

Das Schnitterhaus

In Groß Sperrenwalde in the Uckermark region, timber construction professor Tim Göckel and garden architect Marc-Rajan Köppler have created an extraordinary three-hectare garden world on the site of a former nursery: with meadows and woodland, orchards and an apple tree avenue, lush perennial plantings and hedges cut in cloud shape. The former day labourers’ house from the 1920s, situated next to the landscape park, has been rebuilt and converted into a holiday home for six people.

Bo Pavillon

The Bo Pavilion, located in the heart of the Saarland, a German federal state, is the joint project of three friends. Designer Heike Schneider, architect Michel Leinenbach and visual artist Martin Steinert have combined their skills and expertise to create a building that blends architecture and art. The pavilion’s polygonal ground plan is as versatile as its possible uses: it serves as a holiday home for a relaxed retreat, as a location for inspiring workshops and as a place for focused work.
