Altes Schulhaus

With a wide view over green pastures, the holiday home Altes Schulhaus is situated on a dwelling mound in the heart of Eiderstedt, a peninsula in the German federal state of Schleswig-Holstein. It shares the idyllic location on the extensive property surrounded by a canal with the Friesensteern, an old barn that has been converted into a holiday home. In the past, the teacher used to live in the small house, where he also taught the children living in the vicinity. Now the completely renovated cottage is a cosy holiday home, which offers space for four people on 65 square metres.

Umamma

In the Umamma apartment in the small Tuscan town of San Miniato, the Middle Ages are combined with industrial style. The apartment is extraordinary and will elicit a “Wow!” from many guests—or “umamma” as they say in Tuscany for something very amazing. It took seven years to restore and transform the rooms located on the first floor of an old 16th century palazzo. The original structure of the interiors was reconstructed and the historical materials were exposed. The back of the building was opened up, and large windows were added to frame the views over the Arno Valley. The 230 sqm flat is unusually generous in size but the truly unexpected space is hidden in the vaulted basement…

StadtmauerQuartiere

The StadtmauerQuartiere (town wall quarters) are two small holiday flats in the middle of the historic centre of Freinsheim, a small town in the Palatinate region. The townscape is characterised by a historical town wall with towers and gates. The StadtmauerQuartiere are located directly at and partly even on this wall. The apartments are designed in a contemporary, clear design vocabulary that contrasts with the historical context but fits in sensitively.

Loft in der Nudelfabrik

Zeitz—located in the south of Saxony-Anhalt between Jena and Leipzig—is a city in upheaval. One of the initiatives intended to revitalise the former industrial town is the conversion of a former pasta factory into a creative location. In 2017, Birgit and Mathias Mahnke bought the factory dating from 1909 and have since been developing the 12,000 square metre premises into a place for the visual arts and virtual reality—with exhibition areas, a co-working space and accommodation for artists.

Aux Losanges

The large white diamond pattern in the entrance area are already suggesting it: Aux Losanges in the Tschiertschen mountain village in the canton of Grisons is no ordinary traditional mountain chalet—even if it almost appears to be one from the outside. The architecture firm Caruso St John has transformed the Walser log building dating from 1869 into an extraordinary holiday home with a function room for an art-loving couple from Zurich. They gave the house, formerly used as a café, a make-over that combines British extravagance and Swiss down-to-earthness.

Urfeld 26

The turquoise shimmering lake Walchensee lies virtually at the feet of the Urfeld House. Situated on the edge of the forest at the northern tip of the alpine lake, the house was planned with great emphasis on sustainability. The leitmotif was the use of existing and local materials. Instead of constructing a new building, the dilapidated 1960s house was completely renovated and restructured. The open-plan layout allows for flowing sequences of rooms with exciting visual axes and views into the natural surroundings.

Faazihaus

A magnificent mountain panorama and pure air are the constant companions when spending a holiday at the Faazihaus in the Swiss Alps. The solid timber building on a sunny south-facing slope in the tiny mountain village of Martisberg was built in the 1990s on the foundations of a historical farmhouse (a so-called heathen house) and stood empty for decades in its shell condition. Now it has finally come to life!

Atelier Palermo

Palermo is a city of contrasts, where baroque splendor meets morbid charm and a lively atmosphere. In the capital of Sicily, Stefan Koppelkamm—graphic designer, photographer, author and university lecturer—has fulfilled his dream of having his own atelier in a baroque palazzo. During the time he is not using the studio, it can be rented.
