Kambra

Surrounded by hills, Kambra house is situated in a small Slovenian village not far from the Italian border and the Adriatic coast. Stones characterise not only the karst landscape, but also the building, which from the inside appears to be growing from the rocks. The stone walls and openings and the oak roof structure have been preserved in their original state, while modern elements made of concrete, wood and steel have been added. Opposite the old stable is a concrete cube with some surprising features…

Umamma

In the Umamma apartment in the small Tuscan town of San Miniato, the Middle Ages are combined with industrial style. The apartment is extraordinary and will elicit a “Wow!” from many guests—or “umamma” as they say in Tuscany for something very amazing. It took seven years to restore and transform the rooms located on the first floor of an old 16th century palazzo. The original structure of the interiors was reconstructed and the historical materials were exposed. The back of the building was opened up, and large windows were added to frame the views over the Arno Valley. The 230 sqm flat is unusually generous in size but the truly unexpected space is hidden in the vaulted basement…

The holiday apartment in the west wing of the building ensemble is accessed via the impressive inner courtyard with saltwater pool.

Freiform

Below the village of Verdings, architect Martin Gruber has planned an organic free form next to his own farmstead, which will be rented out as an extraordinary guest house. Like a nature observatory in the midst of the South Tyrolean mountains, the contemporary glass pavilion affords a captivating view across the valley. The design absorbs the topography of its immediate surroundings with its glass envelope and blurs the boundaries between nature and building.

Region/Town: IT – Italy, South Tyrol, Verdings

A Casa de Aldán & Apartamentos Ardora

Overlooking the harbour, the A Casa de Aldán Hotel is situated in the fishing village of Aldán on the west coast of Galicia. Architect Alfonso Penela has created a building from the ruins of an old salting factory, which preserves the history of the place and at the same time radiates modernity. Das Dellacher

Haus Dellacher is considered one of the most important architectural monuments in Austria. The building is an early work of the Austrian-American architect Raimund Abraham, who achieved international renown, particularly through the construction of the Austrian Cultural Forum in New York. Raimund Abraham designed the house in the Burgenland in the 1960s for his friend, the photographer Max Dellacher. It was vacant for over 20 years until architect Johannes Handler saved it from decay in 2015 and restored it true to the original. It is open to the public not only for architectural tours, but can now also be booked for overnight stays.

Zum Egle 1336

Concrete and the Middle Ages! Zum Egle 1336 is a B&B with two rooms in the historic old town of Constance. Opening up instead of covering up was the maxim of the building’s renovation. Traces of the past were meticulously uncovered and put on display. For example, the raw walls of the two guest rooms show remains of old floral wallpaper and medieval murals with images of saints and banners.
