GEHTDOCH

A house near the beach, but yet off the beaten tourist track? There you go! This is the motto of the holiday home GEHTDOCH (‘There you go’) in the Klützer Winkel region between the Hanseatic City of Wismar and the Baltic seaside resort of Boltenhagen. It is located about 800 metres from the beach in the holiday village of Meerleben, a small estate with eleven wooden houses built according to ecological and sustainability criteria.

Altes Schulhaus

With a wide view over green pastures, the holiday home Altes Schulhaus is situated on a dwelling mound in the heart of Eiderstedt, a peninsula in the German federal state of Schleswig-Holstein. It shares the idyllic location on the extensive property surrounded by a canal with the Friesensteern, an old barn that has been converted into a holiday home. In the past, the teacher used to live in the small house, where he also taught the children living in the vicinity. Now the completely renovated cottage is a cosy holiday home, which offers space for four people on 65 square metres.

StadtmauerQuartiere

The StadtmauerQuartiere (town wall quarters) are two small holiday flats in the middle of the historic centre of Freinsheim, a small town in the Palatinate region. The townscape is characterised by a historical town wall with towers and gates. The StadtmauerQuartiere are located directly at and partly even on this wall. The apartments are designed in a contemporary, clear design vocabulary that contrasts with the historical context but fits in sensitively.

Loft in der Nudelfabrik

Zeitz—located in the south of Saxony-Anhalt between Jena and Leipzig—is a city in upheaval. One of the initiatives intended to revitalise the former industrial town is the conversion of a former pasta factory into a creative location. In 2017, Birgit and Mathias Mahnke bought the factory dating from 1909 and have since been developing the 12,000 square metre premises into a place for the visual arts and virtual reality—with exhibition areas, a co-working space and accommodation for artists.

Urfeld 26

The turquoise shimmering lake Walchensee lies virtually at the feet of the Urfeld House. Situated on the edge of the forest at the northern tip of the alpine lake, the house was planned with great emphasis on sustainability. The leitmotif was the use of existing and local materials. Instead of constructing a new building, the dilapidated 1960s house was completely renovated and restructured. The open-plan layout allows for flowing sequences of rooms with exciting visual axes and views into the natural surroundings.

Erlenhof

The Erlenhof in Unterjoch, a mountain village in the Bavarian Allgäu region, is modern and without alpine kitsch, yet firmly rooted in local traditions. The massive wooden building is part of an organic farm and replaces a 370-year-old farmhouse that was destroyed in a fire. During the construction of the house and the design of the apartments, great importance was attached to sustainability.

Architektenhütte Allgäu

You get the best view from high up! The Architektenhütte (Architect’s Lodge) not only sits high up on a steep slope in the Allgäu Alps; in addition, the living area has been laid out under the roof and thus offers the best view of the surrounding mountains and the Iller valley.   The three-storey wooden building, situated in a hamlet adjacent to the Nagelfluhkette Nature Park, reinterprets the local traditional architecture in a modern form. With its straight-lined, austere design, the building looks almost like an alp…

Zum Egle 1336

Concrete and the Middle Ages! Zum Egle 1336 is a B&B with two rooms in the historic old town of Constance. Opening up instead of covering up was the maxim of the building’s renovation. Traces of the past were meticulously uncovered and put on display. For example, the raw walls of the two guest rooms show remains of old floral wallpaper and medieval murals with images of saints and banners.

Das Schnitterhaus

In Groß Sperrenwalde in the Uckermark region, timber construction professor Tim Göckel and garden architect Marc-Rajan Köppler have created an extraordinary three-hectare garden world on the site of a former nursery: with meadows and woodland, orchards and an apple tree avenue, lush perennial plantings and hedges cut in cloud shape. The former day labourers’ house from the 1920s, situated next to the landscape park, has been rebuilt and converted into a holiday home for six people.
