In Groß Sperrenwalde in the Uckermark region, timber construction professor Tim Göckel and garden architect Marc-Rajan Köppler have created an extraordinary three-hectare garden world on the site of a former nursery: with meadows and woodland, orchards and an apple tree avenue, lush perennial plantings and hedges cut in cloud shape. The former day labourers’ house from the 1920s, situated next to the landscape park, has been rebuilt and converted into a holiday home for six people.
The outside appearance of the building is traditional and blends in with the villagescape, while its interior design is modern. The centre of the 150-sqm house is the open-plan living room, which extends up to the roof in the dining area. Floors and ceilings are made of wood; the upper floor was built from solid wood panels. This contrasts with the steel staircase and walkway construction leading to the two bedrooms on the upper floor (a third bedroom is on the ground floor).
Solid wood furniture and the courage to use colours and patterns lend the rooms a warm, homely atmosphere. Old materials of the house were reused for the construction of furniture and create a reference to the history of the building. The dining tabletop is made of old floorboards; the seat of the bench on the veranda is made of old ceiling boarding. In the morning sun, the veranda invites you to have breakfast with a view of the village street. On the opposite side, the house opens up with large windows to the private garden, where there is a covered seating area in addition to the terrace.
What to do
IRelaxing in the house and garden and exploring the landscape park. The landscape of the Uckermark with its many forests and lakes invites you to various outdoor activities: walks, hikes, bike tours, swimming in one of the many lakes in the area, canoeing. Treat yourself to a wellness day in Templin or a short trip to Poland.
Why we like this house
The Schnitterhaus subtly combines modern living with the history of the house. A special highlight is the connection to the adjacent garden world of the former nursery, Alte Gärtnerei. Great for a time out in the country with garden architecture experience.
