Relaxing or working in the rural seclusion of the Uckermark – both is possible at Studio Uckermark. The former stable near the village of Klosterwalde is situated on the edge of the forest and surrounded by the rolling meadows of a former farmstead with buildings enclosing a central yard on three sides. Architect Helga Blocksdorf has converted the old building into a photo studio that can also be rented as holiday accommodation. The most striking change on the outside is the large window cut into the fieldstone wall. It reflects the sky and the landscape and looks like a picture integrated into the facade. It allows light into the interior and affords views of a small lake and the green surroundings. When the door opposite the window is open, a visual axis appears: light and landscape virtually flow through the building.
All partitions in the stable were removed. A reinforced concrete frame divides the space into two halves: the photo studio, which extends all the way up to the gable, and the communal area with dining table and kitchenette. A wall of cupboards hides the entrance to two bathrooms and, with its smooth, light-coloured wood, contrasts with the raw brick walls. The staircase is also made of light wood and appears like an object in the room. Not only does it provide access to the upper floor, it also acts as a room divider between the working and living areas and creates a connection to the panoramic window. The attic accommodates a dormitory, which has a special ambience due to the nailed truss construction. The beams zone the open space into different areas that can be used for storing clothes, as a workplace or as bunk beds.
What to do
Swimming, canoeing, fishing in the many lakes in the area, cycling, hiking. In Templin, 8 km away, there are shopping facilities and a thermal spa.
Why we like this house
The stable has been given a new function while retaining its raw, original character. Gutting and modern additions have set the scene for the historic walls and created expressive spaces.
This house is great for
People seeking relaxation and nature lovers, families with children from the age of 6 (due to the open construction, the house is not suitable for younger children). The studio can also be rented for photo and film shootings, for workshops or as a co-working space.
