The Faktorenhaus is a historic half-timbered house (Umgebindehaus) in the Upper Lusatia region of eastern Germany. This type of half-timbered house reflects the cultural landscape of the border triangle between Germany, Poland, and the Czech Republic. Situated in the village of Ebersbach/Sachs near Görlitz, the heritage-listed building was built in 1831 by a local cloth merchant. Today, this beautifully restored house offers enough space for large families or groups – with a floorspace of 260 square metres – and a very special ambience.
The house combines elements from a variety of different styles, from Baroque to Classic and Art decó. And the furnishings are also an eclectic mix: antique pieces, 1960s furniture, contemporary art, and modern design elements combine to create an exciting composition. Despite its many historical features, including vaults and wood beam ceilings, box windows and shutters, historical wallpaper and wall paintings, as well as tiled stoves, the house is by no means a museum – it’s very much a place for living.
The large modern kitchen and the dining room with a long table offer are perfect for socialising, the library invites you to browse through its books, and the five bedrooms are quiet retreats. There is even a sauna to let you relax and unwind. And on sunny days you can enjoy the garden with its mature fruit trees or the terrace in the inner courtyard.
What to do
The culture and landscape of Upper Lusatia, the springs of the Spree at Kottmar, the Zittau Mountains, Loreto Chapel in Rumburk (CZ), Görlitz, and streets lined with Upper Lusatian half-timbered houses, Haus Schminke (Hans Scharoun) in Löbau.
Why we like this house
A house with plenty of space for large groups and the unique flair of a 19th century cloth merchant's residence.
This house is great for
Large families or groups. Also suitable for small professional seminars, training camps or group retreats.
Owner
From a purely geographical point of view, there are worlds between Lake Baikal and Upper Lusatia. But it all started in faraway Siberia, at a time when we — Christina and Tom (mathematician & lawyer) – were looking for new ways for sustainable tourism and left first traces. Work and family somewhat limit our radius of action today, but we have stuck to the Wild East. And we also experienced enough adventures during the renovation of the old half-timbered house. Those who take a closer look can discover many mementos or personal preferences: the spinet, ceramics from the Sahara, the old Berber rug from the Atlas Mountains, coloured prints from Japan and works by artists from Dresden. And just like the north of Lake Baikal, Upper Lusatia is beautiful and pristine but far from being overcrowded by tourists.
