Selma is enthroned like a peep box on a slope in Gehlberg, the highest mountain village in the Thuringian Forest. The wooden cube opens up to the surroundings with panoramic windows and presents the nature of the UNESCO biosphere reserve in widescreen format. Yet the 120-square-metre house impresses not only with its beautiful views, but also with its design: architecture and interior design interpret the traditional material wood in a contemporary style.
Both outside and inside, Selma is clear and restrained. Opposites add tension: dark meets light, horizontal meets vertical. In contrast to the blackened larch wood façade, the interiors are designed in light solid wood. Black lamps and furniture stand out or – like the kitchen unit – visually recede into the background. Horizontal elements such as the wide windows are combined with vertical structures such as the metal bars of the staircase banister or the partition made of slats on the upper floor. The reduced design vocabulary of built-in cupboards and doors flush with the wall contributes to a calm ambience. Design classics and the lounge sofa made according to the architect’s designs add the finishing touches to the interior.
The centrepiece of the house is the living room, which is zoned into a lounge area and a dining and cooking area by a see-through fireplace. Above the dining table, the room extends over two floors; on the side, there is a window front with large sliding doors. A delicate stairway that seems to hover leads to the bedrooms and bathrooms on the upper floor. The master bedroom with its sweeping view of the landscape and the two bedrooms on the other side of the house are connected by a footbridge across the void. A sauna area with access to the south-east-facing terrace is located on the ground floor. According to one’s preferences, one can find further sunny or shady spots on the large property with its old trees.
