A patchwork of fields and small woods characterises the moorland landscape around Fowlescombe Farm in the county of Devon in south-west England. Just 16 kilometres from the wild beaches and spectacular cliffs of the coast. Set in a long valley in the foothills of Dartmoor National Park, the estate adjoins the ruins of a manor house built in 1537 and includes a series of stone barns and a Victorian farmhouse.
The ensemble was acquired in 2018 by Caitlin Owens and Paul Glade – a couple with many years of experience and passion in architecture as well as the catering and hotel industry – and transformed into an organic farm, ten guest suites and a restaurant. With their concept, the owners are building on the roots of the property, both agriculturally and architecturally. All of the restored and converted buildings are made of Dartmoor limestone, Welsh stone and local timber.
Some of the suites have their own kitchens. For all guests who like to be pampered, the hotel’s own restaurant, Refectory, offers daily changing menus with seasonal produce from the farm and the surrounding area. The open kitchen not only invites you to watch, but also to join in the cooking. In addition to the Refectory, you can also dine in the greenhouse during the warm season.
As green as the fields, orchards and kitchen gardens at Fowlescombe Farm, the buildings too have been designed to utilise only renewable energy, creating a harmonious balance between the built environment and nature. For those wishing to further engage and connect with the rich treasures of Dartmoor, guests can enjoy an inspiring programme of activities both on and off the farm.
