Fusenhof is an historic Black Forest house from 1754 idyllically situated amidst the meadows of the Dreisam valley, at the foot of the Black Forest Mountains near Freiburg. Protected beneath its striking, expansive roof you will find the living area, the stables, the barn, and its gallery-like hallway. This heritage-listed Eindachhof (single-roof-farm) – one of the oldest preserved examples in the southern Black Forest – was renovated over five years under the motto “the old will remain old, the new will become new”. Its mighty roof was covered with aluminium roof tiles, and new wooden elements including windows, doors and balconies were made of silver fir just like the originals – yet they are clearly, recognisably new thanks to their light colour.
The traditional room layout has been retained. The centrepiece of this 260 square metre holiday home is the former “smoke-room” kitchen with a room height of four metres and a large panorama window. Here you will find modern kitchen facilities with a long dining table. Further living rooms are the corner parlour, with new rows of windows and a fireplace, as well as the parlour with a television and a sofa bed. The four bedrooms with their typically low ceilings and small windows have been preserved almost exactly as they were. The furnishings of these rooms have been kept deliberately simple, but are nonetheless of high quality. Some furniture pieces such as the beds were individually made. As an alternative room, former servant’s chambers are available as an optional extra if required.
What to do
Relaxing, cooking in large groups, grilling, hiking, cycling, winter sports (in 15 minutes you reach the mountain Schauinsland), city tours (Freiburg, Mulhouse and Strasbourg in France, Basel and Zurich in Switzerland, wine in the Kaiserstuhl and Markgräfler Land (30 - 40 minutes by car).
Why we like this house
Characterised by the contrasts between old and new, the building has retained its original flair. New elements are recognisably new, but blend in harmoniously with the old.
This house is great for
Large families and groups who want to spend time together.
