In the small hamlet of Giovi – just a few kilometres from the Tuscan cultural centre of Arezzo – this tower house is perched on a spectacular panoramic spot overlooking the Arno river. Built during the Lombard era, it originally formed part of the defensive ring around Giovi, and beyond the tower’s own great stone walls, the rockface drops almost vertically down to the river bank. Just as unique as its setting is Giovi’s Tower interior: the Aretian architect Roberto Baciocchi – archistar of the international haute couture flagship stores – has lent his holiday home a very personal touch, but his priority was always to preserve the traces of time as well as the original structure of the building.
Across its three levels, you can experience the historical character of the tower again and again. The interplay of light, materials and surface textures creates exciting contrasts and a unique atmosphere. On the ground floor there is a light-flooded living room with an open fireplace, a dining room and a kitchen. The pine-bark-clad staircase leads up to the first floor where you will find a bathroom, a walk-in wardrobe with integrated seating aera, and a bedroom. From here an impressive stone staircase leads you to the upper floor, which features two further double rooms complete with en suite bathrooms, one of them with a big whirpool tub in labradorite stone and a panoramic window. The broad terrace with a vine-covered pergola extends to the river side and draws your gaze to the hills opposite and the surrounding scenery. The two large “bathtubs” made of stone can be filled with water via two cascade taps. In the evening, the intentionally diffuse lighting with plenty of candlelight and the gentle rushing of the river combine to ensure an authentic Tuscan ambience.
What to do
Culture trips to Arezzo and the hidden pearls like Cortona, Sansepolcro, Monte Sansavino, Anghiari; trekking in the Casentino Forests, Monte Falterona and Campigna National Park, visits of the Sanctuary of La Verna and the Monastery of Camaldoli.
Why we like this house
A masterful symbiosis of old and new in a magnificent panoramic location. The architect's own furniture creations and design pieces in combination with collectors' items from all over the world lend this holiday home a striking yet thoroughly harmonious flair.
This house is great for
Couples and friends seeking rest and relaxation, and anyone who loves houses with a strong personality. This house is not suitable for families with children due to its location above the river.
