The Golf Lodge is situated in the middle of the grounds and golf course of Schloss Auel in Germany’s Bergisches Land. The new building has its own modern character, yet still integrates seamlessly into the heritage listed ensemble.
The structure, which takes the form of a traditional long house, is constructed entirely of wood. But you’ll be forgiven for not noticing this from the outside, however, since the building is clad in slate – a reference to the traditional local architectural style. The surfaces of the walls and roof blend into one another, lending the building a monolithic character. The slightly asymmetrical window openings also create tension within the simple façade. Meanwhile, narrow roof dormers set vertical accents on the otherwise closed roof surface. The attic is fully glazed on the front side, which features balconies that extend over the full width of the building. The red painted wood cladding of this front creates a visual link to the neighboring buildings.
The simple, elegant design continues indoors. Its five double rooms and two suites feature a light wood – Black Forest silver fir – while the bathrooms are contained within black cubes in each room, with walls and floors of slate that provide dark colour accents.
What to do
Horseback riding, walking and hiking, biking, canoeing, golf, trips into the Bergisches Land, city breaks (Cologne - Bonn)
Why we like this house
The contemporary architecture sets a counterpoint to the historical ensemble without stealing the limelight.
This house is great for
Perfect for golfers, but also nice for anyone looking to unwind and relax in natrual surroundings. Events can also be organized in the castle (for example for family reunions, meetings).
