The manor Gut Üselitz is surrounded by the Üselitzer Wiek bay on the southern side of Rügen, just off Germany’s Baltic Sea coast. This romantic island location is the result of the area’s natural restoration in 2011, when the bay – which had been drained in the 1920s – was flooded again. The reconstruction of this 16th century Renaissance manor also began at this time. The estate had stood empty since the 1970s and was all but in ruins. The remaining fabric of the building (the outer walls and parts of the inner walls) were restored and supplemented with a three-storey construction that reinterprets the historical room layout in a contemporary style. Seven holiday apartments of varying sizes have been created on the upper three floors. Their reduced interior design, which blends modern furniture with vintage pieces and antiques, is discreetly restrained – letting the rooms themselves as well as the views of the parklands and water take centre stage. Like the building itself, the park is a heritage-listed site with mature fruit trees, some of which are over a hundred years old.
What to do
Various beaches, water sports, horse riding, cycling, bird watching, visits to the island’s chalk cliffs, excursions to seaside resorts and to the Hanseatic city of Stralsund.
Why we like this house
