Haus am See
The historic center of Werder in Germany’s Brandenburg region is situated on an island in the river Havel, surrounded by water on all sides. Adjacent to the island’s church, there is a large property which extends right down to the banks of the Havel. Here you will find the Haus am See (House by the lake). This new holiday home adds to an ensemble of buildings that date back to several eras. It complements this diversity of architectural styles with its radical simplicity. It is composed of a concrete block built into the sloped landscape, with a wooden pavilion on top. This combination of materials continues inside: Fair-faced concrete is used for the walls, floors and ceiling. Wooden walls divide the loft-like space into different areas: a bedroom, a living/dining room with panoramic windows, an office space, and a spacious bathroom complete with a sauna. A wooden staircase, which also serves as a bookshelf, leads you to the upper floor, which features a kitchen with a dining area and large terrace. From here you can see the Havel and the Belvedere, a heritage listed historical tea house with a vineyard.
What to do
A sauna with an external pool and outdoor shower. Swimming in the Havel (the property has a bathing jetty). The heritage listed old town with its many restaurants, cafes and shops is in the immediate vicinity. Water sports and bike rides, excursions to Berlin (30 minutes by train).
Why we like this house
A spacious modern retreat for two in a beautiful location - right on the lake and close to the old town. The metropolis of Berlin is also within easy reach.
