Haus am Sonnensee
In the resort region of Binsfeld bei Speyer in western Germany, a nondescript 1960s building has been converted into an impressive modern holiday home. By glazing the entire back of the building and removing several internal walls, what were once small, dark rooms have been turned into light-flooded, open spaces. The focus is drawn out to the panoramic views across lake Sonnensee. The continuous floor surfaces of fair-faced concrete as well as the stylishly simple furnishings and high-quality facilities highlight its modern ambience. The lower level – that provides access to the terrace and into the garden – features the open kitchen, dining and living area, and a bathroom. On the upper floor, you will find the bedroom with its own living area and loggia, and a bathroom with a sauna. Two additional guests can sleep on the sofas on the lower and upper floors. The garden also offers direct access to the lake.
What to do
Swimming, a sauna, walks, cycling, visits to the historic old town of Speyer, starting point for excursions through Germany’s Palatinate region, into the forests, to romantic wine villages, or to the surrounding cities (e.g. Heidelberg, Mannheim, Frankfurt, Bad Dürkheim, Deidesheim).
Why we like this house
A fantastic example of the successful modernization of an outdated weekend house. The location on the lake and the panoramic views are especially beautiful.
