Nestled in the mountain landscape of the Bregenzerwald is the small village of Schnepfau – and here lies Haus Ze(h)n, a simple wooden house. The architect duo Innauer-Matt originally planned the conversion of the former farmhouse as a detached house – after emigrating, the family now rents out the architectural property to nature-loving holiday guests who find a temporary home here.
The centrepiece of the house is the open-plan kitchen on the ground floor. As in the neighbouring rooms, such as the hallway and living room, the exposed concrete of the walls contrasts with the wooden floors and fixtures. The kitchen opens out onto a shed, a kind of covered veranda from which you can look out over the neighbouring buildings and into the countryside. From the living area opposite, the view opens up over the garden and the small village stream into the hilly forest landscape. A central, open staircase leads to the upper floor, which is completely clad in wood – the rooms appear both simple and cosy. Here you will find the master bedroom with an extra-large double bed and an adjoining large bathroom, as well as three identical small bedrooms, each with a single bed. There is a further bathroom in the corridor.
The garden merges almost seamlessly into the surrounding landscape – only the large terrace and a stream flowing along the wooden fence are in between. In summer, you can have a wonderful barbecue here while your drinks cool off in the running fountain. And in winter, the cross-country ski trail starts right on the doorstep, as do numerous (winter) hiking trails.
