In Lorsbach in the Schwarzbach Valley, surrounded by the wooded slopes of the Vordertaunus, half-timbered buildings still line the historic village centre today. It is as if one had travelled back in time. Among them is the Hofreite Lorsbach – a three-sided farmstead built between 1725 and 1775, which perfectly exemplifies the region’s traditional architectural style. This listed cultural monument, with its classic layout – the typical Hessian ‘Hofreite’ consists of a main house, stables and a barn – was in a state of disrepair and was painstakingly restored by its new owners over several years.
The renovation made use of many traditional techniques and building materials such as clay, timber, brick and reed mats, supplemented by Taunus quartzite from a nearby quarry, old cobblestones and local softwood. The colour scheme of the walls is based on linseed oil and lime paints, which a restorer reconstructed from historical evidence.
The half-timbered architecture remains visible in many areas of the interior. Wherever possible, old structural elements have not been replaced, but reinterpreted or repurposed, such as the former millstone, which now serves as a fountain in the courtyard, or an old oak beam, which has been turned into a dining table.
Both flats are suitable for one to two people. The flat in the main house features an open-plan layout comprising a kitchen, dining area and living room with a fireplace; the ceiling height here is low due to the building’s original structure. An original steep staircase leads up to the upper floor, where there is a double bedroom, a spacious shower room and a roomy hallway with a workspace. There is outdoor seating in the courtyard.
Following the conversion, the former barn has been transformed into an open-plan living space spread over two levels. Here too, the kitchen – with its original domed ceiling – and the dining and living areas combine to form a spacious communal room with a fireplace. The upper floor also houses a desk, a double bed and a large shower room. And from the private loggia, you can enjoy views over the old town.
As each of the apartments has a workspace, the Hofreite Lorsbach – thanks to its peaceful atmosphere and good S‑Bahn connections to the Rhine-Main region – is also ideal for a ‘workation’ or for business travellers. And, of course, for swimming amidst beautiful natural surroundings.

Owner
Christiane and Roland Beer have lived in Lorsbach for many years and are deeply rooted in the region – whether hiking in the surrounding area, out hunting or amongst their colourful flock of chickens. When the opportunity arose a few years ago to buy the old farmhouse, the couple transformed the ruin into a new home with great care and attention, and with the help of local tradespeople, preserving the old whilst making way for the new.
