Located only 5 km from the sparking Ionian Sea, Il Cubo is nestled in a peaceful courtyard in the historic center of Nardò in the magical Salento region of southern Italy’s Puglia (Apulia). Arches and vaulted ceilings give this gem of a property its unique character. From a cobblestone lane, you entering the courtyard through an ancient Roman arch. An imposing two-leaf glass door leads directly from the courtyard into the open plan living, dining and kitchen area. Particularly impressive and romantic is the suspended sleeping loft below the historic arches. Simply close Il Cubo’s massive wooden doors to retreat in this spacious airy light-filled space with a nod to the past and a peaceful minimalistic interior. The bathroom has been thoughtfully located on the sleeping loft level. On the rooftop, the private terrace is the perfect place for a quiet dinner under the stars with the distant sound of church bells.
What to do
The Salento region of Puglia is delightfully off the beaten tourist path. Experience the varying Ionian beaches as you hike through secluded coastal nature preserves or choose to relax at a white sand private beach club. Arrange a sailing, boating or kayaking excursion or rent a bicycle to explore the olive groves and coastal byways.
Nardò’s Piazza Salandra provides a perfect venue for embracing Puglia’s famous Baroque architecture. Il Cubo is also well situated for easy visits to charming neighboring towns including Gallipoli, Galatina and the renowned Florence of the South Lecce - less than a 30-minute drive away.
The heel of Italy is accessible in scale. You can easily plan day trips to the north along the Adradic coast to the Unesco heritage site of Alberobello with its fancifully cone-shaped trulli; travel due east of Nardò to Otranto with its remarkable cathedral’s 12th century mosaic floor; or venture further south to the tip of the heel, in Santa Maria di Leuca, where the Ionian and Adriatic seas merge.
An historic market town, the centro storico of Nardò shines year-round with local festivals, a performing arts theater and cultural events – making Il Cubo a gem location any season.
