Les Terrasses de Melides is situated within a large parkland property in the hills surrounding the village of Melides in the coastal region of Alentejo, south of Lisbon. Award-winning architect Manuel Aires Mateus designed this holiday home as an ensemble of four buildings: one main house and three detached bungalows (the property can only be rented as a whole). The minimalist, even abstract buildings of tamped concrete manifest a modern interpretation of the region’s traditional farmhouses. The boundaries between inside and out have been dissolved. Large window-fronts frame the views of the Mediterranean landscape. The terraces are designed like outdoor rooms – with wooden floors and exterior walls but no roof. In the patios of the bungalows, reed roofs create delightful interplays of light and shade.
In the main house you will find the living, dining and cooking area with a fireplace, as well as a bedroom with a bathroom. The three bungalows feature a bedroom each, also with en suite bathrooms. These three separate suites offer sea views to the west and views of the garden to the east. The infinity pool with a wooden deck built into the hill slope invites you to swim and sunbathe with a view of the shimmering Atlantic in the distance.
What to do
You can reach the seaside with its beautiful beaches in 15 minutes, and the popular fishing village of Comporta in 20 minutes. Lisbon is only an hour’s drive away. You can also go hiking and cycling in the area.
