Our new book HOLIDAYARCHITECTURE Selection 2017 not only features 31 extraordinary houses, it also presents a collection of essays. One of these takes us across the pond to the midcentury summer houses on Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
Ever since the wealthy citizens of Boston discovered Cape Cod as a summer resort in the 19th century, the peninsula has been a hugely popular holiday destination. It even drew some of the world’s most famous modernist architects to its coastline, including Marcel Breuer, Serge Chermayeff, Walter Gropius and Eero Saarinen. The region became a haven for a community of European émigré architects as well as a group of creative personalities from the Boston high society. By the mid-20th century over 100 remarkable summer houses had been built.
The essay’s author William Menking, a professor of architecture and founder/chief editor of The Architect´s Newspaper, writes about the Cape’s summer house culture and discusses how modernist architects reimagined a new type of beach house.
