News­letter: The wonder of Vals

How did a valley in Grisons, of all places, become an archi­tec­tural El Dorado? The first per­manent sett­le­ments appeared in the Vals valley during the 12th century. In 1891 the only known thermal spring in the whole of Grisons was dis­co­vered, and soon a first spa was opened with accom­mo­dation. Nevert­heless, the valley, remained largely iso­lated, due to its secluded position to the south of Chur. “Mountain, stone, water – building in stone, building with stone, building into the mountain, building out of the mountain, being in the mountain. How can the mea­nings and the sensual con­no­ta­tions of these words be inter­preted in archi­tec­tural form?“ won­dered Peter Zumthor, and the answer that even­tually took shape made Vals known not only among archi­tects, but also among visitors inte­rested in unusual buil­dings. As a winter sports resort, Vals remains a hidden gem and is not as busy by a long way as other skiing areas in Switz­erland …
