Wal­lonia in Belgium is cha­rac­te­rised by a backdrop of small hills, river valleys, forests and fields. Inspired by the idyllic nature and num­erous pro­jects, archi­tec­tural pho­to­graphers Anne Champion and Jean-Luc Laloux have trans­formed a former fish farm near the village of Flo­rennes with a stone house and shed from the last century into a spa­cious domicile with a resi­dential house (Maison 10étangs) and an addi­tional holiday home (Gîte 10étangs). For groups of up to 14 people, the Maison 10étangs can be rented exclu­sively so that guests have the entire pro­perty at their private dis­posal. Whether for holidays with the extended family, small cele­bra­tions, days tog­ether with friends or as a haven of peace for creative ideas. In addition to the atmo­spheric archi­tecture, which com­bines old struc­tures with modern details and tim­eless mate­rials, there are twelve small lakes and ponds in the grounds, which can be used for swimming and ice bathing with their fresh spring water.

The living space of Maison 10étangs is as bright as the cows grazing in the pas­tures in front of the window fronts — a modern, exten­sively glazed extension with a green pitched roof that com­ple­ments the his­toric natural stone house. A huge open space with a mini­malist, cosy aes­thetic unfolds between a con­s­truction of steel beams and a wooden ceiling. The monu­mental con­crete kitchen island is ideal for com­munal cooking ses­sions, long solid oak wood brings everyone tog­ether at one table and the Scan­di­navian designer arm­chairs in front of the floating fire­place invite you to read, discuss and observe nature. When the weather is fine, the window front can be opened so that the living room opens out onto the garden.

The com­bi­nation of mate­rials — stone, oak wood from the neigh­bourhood, metal and con­crete — runs through the entire house. This is com­ple­mented by colourful details and works of art by the owner as well as renowned design — from Shiro Kuramata, Sergio Rodrigues and Cap­pellini to Arne Norell and Pastoe. A wooden double door leads into the first part of the reno­vated building, whose immense ceiling height is divided by a gallery. A second living room with a small library and games corner awaits guests down­s­tairs, while a separate home cinema with lounge chairs awaits ups­tairs. The three bed­rooms form another har­mo­nious com­bi­nation of rough stone and warm wood, some old, some new. Com­ple­mented by unu­sually designed bath­rooms. If you are looking for com­munal outdoor play space or want to relax, you will find num­erous private and shared areas — from the pétanque court to the sun deck and outdoor cooking area — and almost every guest has their own natural pool.
