A wildly romantic, park-like garden surrounds the Maison Bergdorf in the Swiss town of Interlaken in the Bernese Oberland. The villa was built in 1897 as a holiday home for a Canadian entrepreneur in the traditional chalet style. The owners, Stéphane Houlmann and Mirko Beetschen, have completely renovated the house and have added their own flair to the rooms through an interior design that skilfully plays with colours, shapes and materials. A selected mix of furniture pieces from various eras and a collection of contemporary art also await its visitors.
The house – which is temporarily being run as a B&B – is rented out from October to April 2020 as a holiday house for up to ten people. The villa features three spacious living areas, a kitchen, and eight guest rooms. Each room boasts its own unique character and ambience; some feature romantic fabric wallpaper, others are clad in wood. Through the windows you can see the Jungfrau or the local Harder Kulm with its castle. You can also enjoy the idyllic mountain scenery from outside on one of two verandas, the terrace, or the garden.
What to do
Interlaken is situated in a valley between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz and is surrounded by the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains. Maison Bergdorf’s location is ideal for combining city and mountain holidays. Various mountains can be reached from Interlaken (mountain railways, a panorama train, day trips to the Jungfraujoch). There are several ski resorts in the surrounding area. The house is 10 minutes walk from the castle and the river Aare. Swimming in the lakes or in the Bödeli Bad, stalactite caves St. Beatus, Kunsthaus Interlaken, shops and restaurants.
