Pico do Refugio is located on São Miguel – the largest of the Azores islands – on a hill with panoramic views over the wide Atlantic. The mansion from the beginning of the 17th century was once used as military fortress, orange plantation, tea factory and artists’ residence, before serving as holiday accommodation today. During the extensive restoration of the eight lofts and apartments the historic charm of high ceilings and old beams was maintained and combined with a modern, minimalist decor. Art is still omnipresent today: all houses are decorated with pictures of a local gallery. The farm consists of 50 acres, part of which are classified as ecological reserve.
What to do
If you would like to learn how to dive, you won’t have to go far - because diving courses take place in the resort’s swimming pool. The resort is also ideal for surfers: Santa Bárbara Beach (Ribeira Grande), where international surfing competitions take place annually, is only a seven-minute drive away. With more than ten official and spectacular launch points, the island is a popular location for paragliding.
