When the corn rises high, the Schuur 80 holiday home is almost completely hidden in the landscape, and the natural garden with various seating areas under the old fruit trees becomes a green oasis. At any other time of the year, the huge steel windows of the red brick building offer views of the Flemish countryside – just half an hour from Antwerp and Ghent. The name Schuur refers to the origins of the archetypal building, an almost 100-year-old commercial barn that used to serve as a bustling transshipment point for grain and fertiliser on the outskirts of the village of Haasdonk. After many years of disuse, the building was renovated by the owners in collaboration with the architectural duo Markey & Schelstraete and now offers families and friends a combination of country retreat and elegant urban loft.
The characteristic stone façade has been preserved, while the rest of the building has been completely renovated. Where the large barn door used to be, there is now a generous window facing the courtyard. A bright room with a large kitchen unit and a long table for cooking and eating together. Another line of sight leads to the offset living room, which extends partially up to the roof. With its wood-panelled wall, fireplace and cream-white lounge, this room impressively represents the combination of rural and urban flair. Accompanied by a pool table and a curved bar made of white stone under the dark wooden ceiling. Scattered stained-glass windows, reminiscent of former trading houses, add an exciting accent.
A staircase made of stone, steel and wood leads to the gallery and three of the four bedrooms, which can accommodate up to twelve people, making the house suitable for small groups. Here, too, unusual window formations and old roof beams provide historical details. From the modern interior you can directly step into the lush 1,000 m² garden. Here, you can retreat to the countryside and enjoy the peace and quiet after a day in one of Belgium’s major cities.
