Wilhelminian-style villas are rather rare to find in the Uckermark region. Villa Auguste is one of these rare properties in the region north of Berlin, which is dominated by farms and fields tone churches. The listed villa is located a good hour’s drive from the German capital – in the middle of fields and surrounded by a park-like garden enclosed by a brick wall. The mansion was built around 1905 by an industrialist from Berlin. The railway line along which the house is situated has long been disused and is lined with apple trees. Despite its chequered history as a refugee shelter and several changes of ownership, the villa has retained its historical charm: high ceilings (partly adorned with stucco), floorboards, coffered doors and windows, an original Meissen tiled stove and an impressive staircase characterise the ambience of the carefully refurbished house.
To allow light and a view of the beautiful nature into the house, formerly bricked up windows were opened again, and a generous living-dining area was created by removing a wall. Here you sit, eat or play at the sunlit dining table, or read a book in front of the wood-burning stove in the evening. The light-coloured varnished floorboards contribute to a friendly ambience. The three bathrooms were designed with cement tiles and fittings made of unpolished brass in the style of the period of construction. The new cast-iron radiators also fit in with the old building. The furnishings are a modern interpretation of country house style with vintage furniture and a subtle colour scheme. The dark blue English country kitchen harmonises with the grey-green colour of the historical tiled stove and the exposed historical layers of paint on the kitchen door frame. Special eye-catchers are the colour accents, such as the dark green wall in one of the bedrooms, where the bedside cabinets were painted in the same shade. In each of the reduced and calmly designed rooms, there are accents that refer on the surrounding nature, such as the motif wallpaper on a living room wall, old botanical school wall maps or the floor tiles in the bathrooms.
The room layout offers plenty of space for socialising for up to 10 guests, and the spacious eat-in kitchen invites hobby chefs to cook and bake. In front of the kitchen is a terrace, which is a pleasant place to sit even in autumnal north-westerly winds. In addition to a bedroom with directly adjoining shower room on the ground floor, there are three further bedrooms on the upper floor – one has an adjoining bathroom with free-standing bathtub, the other two share a spacious shower room. In the newly landscaped, professionally designed garden, typical local perennials, shrubs and hedges complement the existing stock of old fruit trees and a large meadow behind the house. This is a wonderful place to sit, let your gaze wander and, with a bit of luck, watch the deer in the nearby forest.
What to do
Hiking, cycling, walking, lazing around, cooking, baking, observing and experiencing nature, swimming in the nearby lakes, visits to the medieval architecture in Prenzlau, every 2 years the UM Festival with literature and art takes place in the surrounding villages of Pinnow and Sternhagen-Gut. If you like, you can borrow the house's canoe and float across the lake.
