Villa Cardo

With Villa Cardo, architect Andrew Trotter has created a house that transfers iconic Apulian architecture into the present. The modern house is deeply rooted in the traditions of the region and characterised by simplicity and tranquillity. Surrounded by old olive and almond trees, the house is situated on a 1-hectare site near the Apulian town of Carovigno. The building, which is made up of several white cubes, was built using local materials and traditional construction methods. Whitewashed tuff walls, sand-coloured floors and vaulted ceilings characterise the interior ambience. The effect of the materials is emphasised by the minimalist furnishings designed in natural shades, which are pleasantly understated. Some furniture, such as brick-built sofas and beds, even merge with the building.

In addition to the kitchen, dining and living area on the ground floor, the villa boasts a cinema room and a Turkish bath in the basement. There are three bedrooms, with the master bedroom having a veranda with outdoor bathtub and shower in addition to the en-suite bathroom. A fourth bedroom is located in an old outbuilding, which was once used to store tools and olives. Between the two buildings is the pool; designed in the colour of red earth, it unobtrusively merges with its surroundings. On one side, it is flanked by a pergola with a bamboo roof, which serves as an additional outdoor living area with a summer kitchen, dining table and lounge corner. Those who climb onto the roof terrace can see over the trees to the sea, which is 7 kilometres away.

What to do

Visits to the beach or the Torre Guaceto Natural Reserve, excursions to the villages and towns in the area (Ostuni, Alberobello, Polignano a Mare).
