At an altitude of 1,487 metres, at the foot of the Paneveggio – Pale di San Martino National Park, you’ll find one of the most historic villages in the Dolomites: San Martino di Castrozza, made famous by the first pioneers of alpinism in the 19th century. In the centre of the small village, just a few steps from the church and the main square, Bruno Morassutti built a holiday home for his family in 1956/57 together with his associate Angelo Mangiarotti.
Villa Morassutti is an impressive example of Frank Lloyd Wright’s influence on Bruno Morassutti, who, as a newly graduated architect from Venice, travelled to the USA in 1949 to take part in Wright’s famous Taliesin Fellowship. Inspired by Wright’s ideas of ‘organic architecture’, he reinterpreted traditional alpine houses and translated the principles of Usonian houses – such as the open floor plan and the close connection to nature – into European building language.
Local materials such as wood and natural stone meet modern construction principles, with visible wooden supporting structures inside. The rooms are characterised by proportions, lighting and views of the landscape. The centrepiece of the family home is a large living room with an open fireplace, which develops on several levels and separates individual areas with low stone walls. It flows seamlessly into the dining area and the kitchen, which is separated by a sliding glass door and cupboards covered in red fabric. Surrounding the central living area and on a further floor are a total of five separate bedrooms, three bathrooms and a sauna.

What to do
San Martino di Castrozza is one of the most important tourist centres in Trentino. There are numerous sporting opportunities in the heart of the nature park: (snowshoe) hiking, trekking and via ferrata tours, snowboarding, mountain biking and horse riding, freeride descents and cross-country ski trails, snow playgrounds for children, open-air art and music festivals in summer, excursions to the picturesque villages of the Primiero Valley and the neighbouring Vanoi region, which is considered the green heart of Trentino
