Vipp Chimney House

With its 35-metre high, minaret-like chimney, the Vipp Chimney House in the north of Copenhagen cannot be overlooked. Studio David Thulstrup converted the former pumping station dating from 1902 for the design brand Vipp into an accommodation, which is a holiday home and simultaneously a showroom for the products of the Vipp universe. Guests can experience the brand´s products including the new furniture collection in a home-away-from-home setting.

Vipp’s functional design philosophy is evident throughout the house—from the architecture to the interior. The old brick building was extended by one storey, which stands out from the existing building due to its dark steel façade, but at the same time it is restrained due to its plainness. The arched windows were extended down to the floor to allow more daylight into the interior. With their structure, the walls finished with light grey plaster, through which the bricks shimmer, and the terrazzo floor made of pebbles create a contrast to the smooth surfaces of furniture, glass, and metal elements of the building.

A strictly geometrical steel staircase with corrugated aluminium cladding separates the kitchen and dining area from the lounge corner and makes a striking statement. The dining area extends up to the roof, with a five-metre long pendant luminaire made of Plexiglas panels emphasising the enormous ceiling height of 8.5 metres. The chimney is visible through a skylight. In the two bedrooms on the upper floor, one looks through 4.5-metre high glass panels down to the living area. New and old are combined in a subtle way: a change of material on the bedroom walls makes the former dimensions of the house visible. The master bedroom has a balcony enjoying the morning sun; the house also has a garden.
