A gateway to Salento: to this day, Palazzo Coppola plays a central role in the urban fabric. The 190-square-metre roof terrace serves as a viewpoint overlooking the Ionian Sea and, stretching from the sun deck with its plunge pool to the dining area with its outdoor kitchen, is the largest room in the house.

Ferienhaus Palazzo Coppola in Salento, Matino / IT – Italy

Holiday home Palazzo Coppola

The best way to begin a stay at Palazzo Coppola is with a view over the rooftops of Matino – a typical Salento village situated between Gallipoli and Maglie. At 190 square metres, the roof terrace is not only the largest room in the spacious apartment, but also an area featuring various levels and zones: from a raised vantage point overlooking the Ionian Sea, through a sun deck with a plunge pool, to the dining area with an outdoor kitchen. It is structured by small steps, high walls and surprising openings.

To this day, the Palazzo Coppola plays a central role in the urban fabric, as the building stands on the foundations of the Arco della Pietà, a triple archway dating from the 17th century, through which one officially enters the historic old town. This connection to the archway also confirms the Palazzo’s origins, which were subsequently altered on several occasions by extensions added in the 18th and 19th centuries. Different eras and influences have been harmoniously brought together through the renovation and its minimalist design, and have since combined traditional craftsmanship with contemporary elegance.

The residential wing is situated on the first floor and is accessed via a separate entrance. A barrel-vaulted entrance hall and a skylight lead into the atrium-like inner courtyard, which forms the heart of the property and serves as a cooler counterpart to the roof terrace – a place of tranquillity and light. Once covered, it was opened up during the restoration and the walls raised to optimise ventilation and shading and to restore the building’s original grandeur. The courtyard forms the centre around which all the other rooms are arranged: from the three bedrooms, each with its own living area and bathroom, to the communal spaces – a dining room, a kitchenette, two living rooms and a studio.

The materials, too, bridge the gap between eras: old, handcrafted cement tiles evoke the building’s prestigious past, the lime plaster reflects the soul of the region, and the selected classics of Italian design history blend so naturally into the surroundings that it feels as though they have always been there. Palazzo Coppola is not only a place of relaxation, but also a cultural project. The income from letting the property goes towards artist residencies, which enrich Matino with site-specific artworks. In this way, the old building becomes a living part of the community, preserving history whilst simultaneously providing new impetus.

What to do

Experience life in the historic old town whilst enjoying the peace and quiet of the house; go hiking and cycling in the sun-drenched hills through olive groves and vineyards; swim at the numerous beautiful beaches; try out a range of water sports; and discover Matino’s historic sights (such as the Palazzo Del Tufo or the underground oil mills carved out of limestone), day trips to Gallipoli, Lecce, Otranto or Santa Cesarea Terme, or to the surrounding agriturismi

Why we like this house

The minimalist house is tastefully designed from top to bottom. The only dilemma, however, is which to choose each day: the roof terrace or the courtyard.

This house is great for

Families, groups of friends and couples looking for a peaceful retreat in an authentic Salento village

Sustainability

The revenue is channelled into artist residencies, thereby leaving the town with a lasting legacy of site-specific urban art installations. Electric vehicle charging points at the entrance to the town;
