On the outskirts of the Frisian town of IJlst, where planks were once planed and ships built, stand the Sinnehúskes – modern wooden houses with gabled roofs right on the canal bank; unassuming and energy self-sufficient: solar collectors and a geothermal heat pump provide hot water and heating, while solar panels generate electricity. Comprehensive insulation and an intelligent ventilation system further reduce energy consumption.
Inside: open floor plans, steep roof slopes, plenty of daylight. The restrained, natural effect of the exterior façade is continued in the interior design. Furniture and fixtures are subordinate to the architecture; the rooms are simple, functional and reduced to the essentials. Light wood panelling meets dark surfaces, complemented by a few precisely placed accents. The room layout is traditional but clever: the ground floor living room and open kitchen flow seamlessly into one another, while the sleeping and bathroom areas under the roof create a pleasant loft feeling.
And then comes the real highlight: your own boat at the jetty. A few steps across the terrace and you’re sitting in your solar-powered, 5.80-metre-long aluminium electric boat, ready to fetch your breakfast rolls in the morning. The boat is the ideal means of transport for gliding into the charming centre of IJlst, past old captains’ and merchants’ houses with their Overtuinen – small gardens that extend to the water’s edge. Whenever you feel like it, you can set off to explore the region’s waterways or simply go for an evening ‘een rondje varen’ like the locals.
What to do
Water sports on the nearby coast, cycling, hiking, boat trips on rivers, canals and lakes to explore Fryslân, cultural events in Leeuwarden – European Capital of Culture 2018 – and a visit to the port city of Harlingen, from where the Wadden Islands can be reached. The centre of IJlst is within walking distance; right next door is a small marina and a nature campsite.
Why we like this house
Refraining architecture with a sustainable and future-proof profile, located right on the waterfront – with its own electric boat!
This house is great for
Ideal for couples or families with older children (not suitable for small children due to its location directly on the water). Sinnehúskes 1 & 2: Double rooms for two people. Sinnehúskes 3 & 4: two additional single beds on the landing – ideal for children and teenagers.
Sustainability
The Sinnehúskes are built entirely of wood. Solar thermal collectors, photovoltaic panels and a brine-water heat pump make the buildings energy self-sufficient. Public transport: IJlst has its own railway station with connections to Leeuwarden.

Wunderschöne Ferienhäuser in einmaliger Lage.
