Ferienhaus Seaside Villa Capo Zaf­ferano

I’m not sure how to express how much we abso­lutely loved the expe­rience we had staying at the Capo Zaf­ferano Villa but it was truly won­derful and peaceful. The view was the entire reason for booking this pro­perty and it defi­nitely did not dis­ap­point. Stunning!! If we did nothing else on holiday, it was to soak in the view…everyday. Giacomo was the best host, so kind and so intent that our stay was perfect. I know we will be back…I can’t imagine going back to Sicily and not staying at this villa.

Our second stay was just as won­derful as the first. Living to the rhythm of the sublime lights of the Medi­ter­ranean is a par­ti­cu­larly soothing expe­rience. We also really enjoyed being able to cook the deli­cious local produce, espe­cially the fish caught during the night and all magni­ficent. We will come back !!

We had a fan­tastic expe­rience staying at this beau­tiful house in an abso­lutely stunning location. The archi­tecture and design of the villa are truly unique – modern yet per­fectly inte­grated into the natural sur­roun­dings, with breath­taking views of the sea. We stayed here for a pho­to­shoot, and the setting could not have been more ideal. The light, layout, and ambiance of the space all con­tri­buted to a great result.

The host, Giacomo, was also a real pleasure to deal with – fri­endly, responsive, and very helpful throughout our stay. He made sure we had ever­y­thing we needed and offered great local tips as well. If you’re looking for a special place to stay that com­bines ele­gance, tran­quility, and cha­racter, this villa is a great choice.

We had the extra­or­dinary pleasure of shooting part of our new feature film at Villa Capo Zaf­ferano in March 2025. This archi­tec­tural mas­ter­piece over­looking the Capo Zaferrano, on the nor­thern coast of Sicily, was designed by the the Italian architect Armando Barraja as a summer resi­dence for his family in the late 1980s. His son, Giacomo Barraja, also a gifted architect, was the perfect host to us, and a col­la­bo­rator, ensuring our pro­duction ran smoothly, opening up the entire villa, and its sur­rounds, for our film. He and his beau­tiful family sup­ported us in every way pos­sible, and we cannot thank them enough. We lived and worked at the villa, and had the most magni­ficent time. This is the perfect place for a film, fashion shoot, or indeed a Holiday!

Giacomo ist ein auf­merk­samer und hilfs­be­reiter Gast­geber. Er hat uns per­sönlich begrüßt, je eine Kiste Orangen und Erd­beeren besorgt und Fragen umgehend beant­wortet. Er ist ein außer­ge­wöhn­licher Mensch, dem es am Herzen liegt, seinen Gästen eine fan­tas­tische Zeit zu bereiten. Die Villa mit wun­der­schönen Blick­achsen ver­mittelt einem den Ein­druck auf einem Schiff zu sein und liegt an einer wun­der­schönen pri­vaten Bucht mit direktem Zugang zum Meer. Traumhaft und perfekt für einen Auf­enthalt am Meer. Eigentlich besteht kein Anlass den Ort zu ver­lassen, aber bereits in der nahen Umgebung gibt es zahl­reiche Mög­lich­keiten für Besich­ti­gungen und Ent­de­ckungen. Unser vier­wö­chiger Auf­enthalt in der Villa Capo Zaf­ferano werden wir unver­gesslich in Erin­nerung behalten und freuen uns auf unseren nächsten Besuch.

Wir waren im Herbst mit unseren 2 Kindern in der Villa Capo Zaf­ferano. Es ist ein magi­scher Ort mit einem sehr beson­derem archi­tek­to­ni­schem Haus. Zurück­ver­setzt in ein 80er Design erlebt man hier absolute Gebor­genheit, Inti­mität und Ruhe. Giacomo ist äus­serst bemüht, dass man sich in seinem Haus wohl­fühlt und gibt einem alle Infor­ma­tionen um den Auf­enthalt in der Umgebung perfekt geniessen zu können. Vielen DANK! für diese Zeit an dem kris­tall­klaren Wasser, dass mir jedem morgen den Atem genommen hat.

It might be seldom that you return to the same place as a tourist hunting for new and enri­ching expe­ri­ences but with Capo Zaf­ferano it is some­thing dif­ferent. Dif­ferent to so many other places with beau­tiful archi­tecture and a stunning view to the ocean or impressive land­scapes. Capo Zaf­ferano is a place with a soul!
Ever­ybody stepping out on the wide balcony after the gate to the villa has closed behind you imme­diately senses that this place — not only due to its won­derful view — but the certain atmo­sphere goes imme­diately under the skin. We assume the architect of the house must have sensed this deep inside his creative soul and with love and respect for the place managed to create a small wonder… The balcony which stretches all along the entire length of the house towards the 180° visible horizon of the Medi­ter­ranean is like one stret­ching out its arms in a big wel­coming attitude to the place embracing mill­en­niums of his­toric inci­dents to which the Capo is a rock-solid witness.
That is why we asked Giacomo to reserve it yet another time for the entire family of 6 so that we could show our grown-up grand­children that places can have a soul, and that archi­tecture can enhance that feeling for a place when the architect has a love and a sense for a place.
Retuning after 4 years we were both happy and released to see that Giacomo has been able to keep his family’s holiday home and his father’s archi­tecture from the 1980ies in good con­dition knowing that oceans and stormy wea­thers take its heavy tolls. Indoor it again becomes a pleasant revi­ta­lizing of Italian design from the 80ies which remain in the house as a nost­algic reminder of another time (at least for our age), but by our grand­children was ack­now­ledged as “cool” to be polite. So as the fact that you as young and ener­getic person can climb the Capo 160 meter up and jump from the cliffs closer to the house heads on directly into the Medi­ter­ranean is more than cool.
Giacomo’s list of restau­rants is surely a list based on years of expe­rience with Sicilian food on the true and basic delights of family Sunday get tog­ether, and we can add a new­comer restaurant La Strummula in Por­ti­cello as a somewhat more exclusive addition to the family list.
Sicily spans in the history of the civi­lization over mill­en­niums and between paradise and its lesser attrac­tions of human’s ignorant acti­vities… Villa Capo Zaf­ferano is surely that place with a soul to return to.… and good to know that Giacomo always seems to be available with his help and under­standing for our middle European needs. Thank you!

This was our second visit and we were for­t­unate to stay for two weeks at Gia­como’s won­derful house. There was so much to see and do in the area. We explored the baroque villas of Bag­heria and Aspra (also the extra­or­dinary anchovy museum), the ancient Greek town of Solunto, of course Palermo and also further afield such as Salemi and the Cretto di Burri at the ruined town of Gibellina. Much time was spent at the house swimming in the won­derful sea. Giacomo was a won­derful host, as ever. We are now dre­aming of our third visit!

Wir durften eine wun­derbare Woche in der Villa von Giacomo ver­bringen. Die Zeit war kurz, wir wären gerne länger geblieben. Tolles Ambiente unter Wahrung einer abso­luten Pri­vat­sphäre mit eigenem Pri­vat­zugang zum Meer. Giacomo hat uns herzlich mit einem großen Obstkorb begrüßt, uns in sein Haus und die Umgebung ein­ge­führt. Zahl­reichen Emp­fehlung konnten wir mangels Zeit gar nicht nach­kommen. Fragen während unseres Auf­ent­haltes bekamen wir alle sehr rasch von Giacomo beant­wortet. Die besondere Lage der Villa am Capo Zaf­ferano mit dem unend­lichen Blick auf das Meer ist ein­zig­artig. In den nahe gele­genen Fischer­dörfer Por­ti­cello und Aspra findet man eine authen­tische Atmo­sphäre vor, sehr stim­mungsvoll mit zahl­reichen Mög­lich­keiten bei den Fischern das Beste aus dem täg­lichen Fang zu mode­raten Preisen ein­zu­kaufen. Palermo ist ab der nächsten, 10 Minuten ent­fernten Bahn­station, mit dem Zug in 15 Minuten zu erreichen, besser geht’s einfach nicht. Danke, wir hatten eine groß­artige Woche!

We had an abso­lutely fan­tastic time in this beau­tiful house. The private access to the sea and outside shower are the epi­phany of silent luxury, and the interior is simply beau­tiful. Bag­heria, Por­ti­cello and Aspra are beau­tiful sur­rounding towns and Palermo is also just a stone-throw away. Giacomo and his family are won­derful, kind and attentive hosts. We had the best time !

J’ai passé une semaine au mois de juillet 2024 à sept dans la maison et j’ai trouvé le lieu magique. D’abord il a le site, somp­tueux, et l’accès direct à la mer. Les bai­gnades sont faciles et déli­cieuses. La maison elle-même est très belle, avec ses lignes épurées, ses cir­cu­la­tions ori­gi­nales, ses effets de lumière un peu partout. On vit dans l’univers des grands desi­gners ita­liens mais pas comme dans un magazine de déco. Tout est en parfait état mais on sent qu’il s’agit d’abord d’une maison de famille, un lieu vivant. Je revi­endrai.

Letzte Woche haben wir die Villa besucht und eine per­sön­liche, sehr liebe Führung von Giacomo, Eigen­tümer des Hauses und Sohn des Archi­tekten, bekommen. Er hat uns herzlich emp­fangen und über das traum­hafte Grund­stück geführt. Es ist so schön zu sehen; wie viel Herzblut er in diesen Ort steckt. Die Villa ist in jeder Hin­sicht ein­zig­artig: die besondere Lage am Capo Zaf­ferano, der endlose Meer­blick, die Pri­vat­sphäre, die Archi­tektur und natürlich das Inte­rieur. Das Haus bietet sehr viel
Platz, tolle Sitz­ecken und ver­schie­denste Rück­zugsorte auf den Ter­rassen oder auch im
groß­zü­gigen Garten. Wir freuen uns auf unseren nächsten Besuch!

Das Haus hat unbe­strit­te­n­er­massen eine herr­liche, ja ein­zig­artige Lage. Die Ruhe, die Abge­schie­denheit und der ewige Blick aufs Meer sind das Wahr­zeichen dieser Villa. Man spürt, dass ma in einem belebten Haus wohnt, ohne das Gefühl in ein Pri­vathaus ein­zu­dringen.
Noch etwas: Giacomo, der Sohn des. Eigen­tümers ist um alles besorgt und ver­wöhnt alle Gäste wie per­sön­liche Freunde. Sein Wunsch an jenem ein­zig­ar­tigen Ort nicht Mieter, sondern Freunde zu beher­bergen, geht sicher in Erfüllung!

We had such a won­derful stay in Seaside Villa Capo Zaf­ferano… we really didn’t want to leave! Giacomo was the perfect host; waiting pati­ently when we arrived late to give us a very per­sonal tour of the house that was designed by his father ‑this didn’t feel like a tran­sac­tional villa rental, but someone sharing their family home with you. We per­so­nally loved the vibe of the house — full of colourful Italian design fur­niture that we app­re­ciated, but with the feeling of a loved family home, not a cold house where you are scared to touch any­thing ;) The villa is truly one of a kind — built into the side of the cliff with so many inside and outside areas to explore and enjoy the beau­tiful views from. Sitting on the terrace with a morning coffee and wat­ching the boats sail by was pure bliss. The private cove is the perfect spot for a quiet morning dip in the ocean, the local fishing vil­lages are a great spot to grab a granita and Palermo is only 15 minutes by train from the closest station… what more could you want!?! We couldn’t have asked for any­thing more, and we’re already looking forward to our next visit.

We have spent an incre­dible week at this villa. The location is an absolute delight. The beauty of sur­rounding nature, the variety of flora, the changing with day­light colors of the sea … couldn’t be more beau­tiful and ful­filling. This house is a hidden tre­asure. Being there felt very exclusive and excep­tional since the resi­dence is located on the slope and is distant from other buil­dings. The views are unbe­lie­vable. The ability to swim in the sea was a divine expe­rience. We dined, sun­bathed, drunk Italian friz­zante, lis­tened to Italian songs and just tried to do nothing since we felt that we had ever­y­thing. I believe we were the closest to the Italian “dolce far niente” we have ever been. Giacomo was a won­derful host, very nice, polite and com­mu­ni­cative. He pro­vided us with the best restau­rants’ recom­men­da­tions and was always ready to help. Besides the hedo­nistic mor­nings, after­noons and evenings, we were able to visit Aspra, Bag­heria and Palermo and enjoy the eclectic beauty of Sicily. We have left with sweet memories and with hope to be back again. Thank you, Giacomo, and see you soon.

Wir durften im Mai zwei Wochen mit der Familie in Gia­comos Haus ver­bringen. Das Haus ist ein Traum und die Lage ein­zig­artig. Wir wurden von Giacomo und seinem Vater, dem Archi­tekten des Hauses sehr herzlich emp­fangen. Die Villa ist der per­fekte Ort, um sich zu erholen und zu ent­spannen. Archi­tek­to­nisch bietet sie eine Vielzahl ein­zig­ar­tiger Innen- und Aus­sen­räume, welche den Tag hin­durch immer wieder neue Aus­blicke oder Aspekte der Land­schaft erlebbar machen. Sowohl der Gast­geber wie auch das Haus und Umgebung sind sehr kin­der­freundlich. Wir kommen gerne wieder und können die Villa allen wei­ter­emp­fehlen.

This is the sort of place that you don’t want to tell anybody about because you want to keep it all to yourself. A truly fan­tastic expe­rience. Every day the Archi­tecture and the land­scape and the sea and the sun combine to put a massive smile on your face. Or a suc­cession of smiles as you round a corner and see another fan­tastic detail or dis­cover another lovely view or a new path down through the gardens. It was truly won­derful and Giacomo was a great host and really nice to deal with. We were two families with 3 small children between the ages of 3 and 7 between us and we could make the accom­mo­dation work well for us. The house is full of pre­cious and beau­tiful things but there is also lots of great outdoor space for kids to explore and run around in. I could also see how it would work well with slightly older children who could enjoy having the down­s­tairs room to them­selves and a bit of autonomy. The location is fan­tastic to explore the two local fishing vil­lages and head in to Palermo which is a short train ride. Great restau­rants, great local produce, nice runs, great beaches a short drive away. And the swimming from the rocks to the Capo is unbe­lie­vable, an every day joy. Crystal clear waters teeming with fish and warm(ish) in October when we went there. We will go back as soon as we pos­sibly can. Thanks so much!

We had a won­derful two week stay at the house with our family. The house is fabulous and the location amazing. We spent much time swimming in the beau­tiful sea and exploring both Palermo and the nearby towns of Aspra and Barg­heria (in par­ti­cular the Villa Pala­gonia). Giacomo was extremely helpful and generous with his time.

A won­derful 2021 july week in this fan­tastic house at Capo Zaf­ferano. The house has an extra­or­dinary location with a beau­tiful view over the sea horizon and Capo Zaf­ferano. It is so relaxing to just sit there and watch the sea. It is often a light very com­for­table breeze and shadow on the main terrace, but one level down there is a very sunny “sun­bathe terrace”. Also very unique to have your own little private lagun to go swimming. As an alter­native there is a nice outdoor shower where you can cool down while still wat­ching the beau­tiful sea ! We had a very relaxing week, alt­hough one year delayed because of the pan­demic. But also from the pan­demic per­spective, we felt very safe in this house and with a nice little food­store near by in Por­ti­cello. We can highly recommend to spend a week or more in this extra­or­dinary house. Grazie Mille, Giacomo !

What a great place!

The house is beau­tifully inte­grated into the land­scape and the carefully designed outdoor spaces and the staging of the views are breath­taking.

There were only four of us, so we used only the ups­tairs area which offered plenty of space for us. There are two addi­tional rooms on the lower level, which are acces­sible via the lower ter­races, allowing privacy even when staying with a larger group.

The outside with its two main ter­races, two side bridges and some smaller sitting places offers both sunny spots for sun­bathing and cool and shady spots.

The easy walk through the natu­ra­listic garden to the private swimming bay is a delight.

Alt­hough there is plenty to see and explore we spent more time than nor­mally at the house — not because of Corona but because we found it hard to leave. We enjoyed the views, the changing color of Capo Zaf­ferano, wat­ching the fishing boats going out and the sound of the ocean.

We had ori­gi­nally booked for last year but had to cancel due to travel rest­ric­tions. Giacomo was very patient and under­standing, and we were glad that we could travel this year. He pro­vided us with excellent tips and was a very attentive host.

Die Villa Capo Zaf­ferano ist ein ein­ma­liger Rück­zugsort! Die Villa ist archi­tek­to­nisch wohl überlegt und perfekt in die Land­schaft ein­ge­bettet. Der Blick auf das Meer von den ver­schie­denen Ter­rassen oder dem eigenen Meer­zugang ist unglaublich beru­higend und sieht jede Minute anders aus. Giacomo ist ein sehr guter und freund­licher Gast­geber und seine Tipps sind goldwert. Die Villa emp­fehlen wir unein­ge­schränkt weiter und kommen gerne wieder.

Für uns die per­fekte Unter­kunft, um trotz der Corona-Pan­demie sicher reisen zu können: in dieser Villa ist Abstand halten kein Problem, es gibt weder Nachbarn noch Mit­be­wohner (ausser denen, die man auf die Reise selbst mit­bringt). Wer nicht will, muss die Villa nicht ver­lassen (von Ein­käufen abge­sehen), und wer will das schon, wenn die Aus­blicke von den ver­schie­denen Ter­rassen aus so traumhaft sind wie hier, wenn der Garten und das Meer locken. Wir waren im Oktober da, das Wetter war gemischt, Baden im Meer direkt am Haus wegen der Wellen nur manchmal möglich. Aber der nächste, kom­plett men­schen­leere Strand ist nur wenige Minuten Auto­fahrt ent­fernt. Auch sonst hat man im Haus und in der Umgebung alles, was man braucht. Wir haben den Grill genauso genossen wie den Kamin, und die aus­ge­wählten Restau­rants, die Giacomo uns emp­fohlen hat. Ein sehr erhol­samer Auf­enthalt, orga­ni­siert von einem umsich­tigen und herz­lichen Gast­geber.

Im Oktober haben wir zu viert eine Woche in der Villa Capo Zaf­ferano ver­bracht. Es waren wun­derbare Tage an einem aus­ser­ge­wöhn­lichen Ort. Die Villa Capo Zaf­ferano besticht mit einer offenen und licht- und luft­durch­flu­teten Archi­tektur, einer gran­diosen Ter­rasse und einem Garten, der vor ein­hei­mi­schen Pflanzen nur so strotzt, wild und weise gestaltet. Darin eine ein­fache, sehr schön gestaltete Dusche, die, inmitten eines medi­ter­ranen Dschungels und mit voller Breit­seite Meer­blick einen der schönsten Orte dar­stellt, um nach sal­zigem Meerbad Süss­wasser an sich her­unter laufen zu lassen!
Innerhalb einer Woche haben wir ver­schiedene Wet­ter­lagen erlebt, das Leben derart nah am Meer ist ein ganz beson­deres Erlebnis. Die Natur ist all­ge­gen­wärtig, selbst im Haus.
Wir haben nur die oberer Wohnung gemietet, die für 4 Per­sonen gross­zügig ist. Die Zimmer haben alles was es zum ein­fachen, guten Leben braucht. Gleiches gilt für Bade­zimmer, Küche und den Wohnraum. Der Luxus zeigt sich in der Gestaltung der Räume selbst, in einer natür­lichen Belüftung durch zahl­reichen kleine Fenster, in der Anordnung der Räume, in Sonnen- und Schat­ten­orten rund um das Haus.
Der haus­eigene Zugang zum Meer ist darüber Hinaus ein wei­teres High­light: Mor­gencafe auf warmen Steinen nach einem Bad im glas­klaren Meer und das alleine, wenn man will!
Die Villa liegt zwi­schen klei­neren Dörfern, die mit Fisch- und Super­markt, kleinen Gemü­se­läden, aber auch Geld­au­tomat und Bäckerei gut aus­ge­rüstet sind. Ein Auto ist von Vorteil, es kann vor dem Haus par­kiert werden. Wer gut und gern zu Fuss ist, kann auch per Pedes zum Ein­kaufen. Palermo lädt in ca. 40 Minuten zum Ein­tauchen ins Gross­stadt­ge­tümmel ein, was ange­sichts aller Vorzüge die die Villa bietet aller­dings Über­windung kostet.
Giacomo Baraja hat uns mit viel Zeit und Wissen rund um das Haus und die Umgebung sehr sehr herzlich emp­fangen und stand jederzeit für weitere Aus­künfte zur Ver­fügung. Wir emp­fehlen das Haus wärmstens weiter, eine Perle!
Auch wir würden in Zukunft sehr gerne zurück­kommen. Thank you Giacomo!!

Wir ver­brachten eine Woche Mitte Juni in der wun­der­vollen Seaside Villa.
Die viel­ge­rühmte Archi­tektur des Hauses an dieser Stelle der Küste über dem Meer ist perfekt, innen ver­bindet sich mit aussen, sie ist licht und luftig und leicht und im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes unbe­schwert.
Die großen Ter­rassen ermög­lichen den stän­digen Licht­wechsel und die Farben des Meeres direkt zu erleben und viel Freiraum für jeden Ein­zelnen.
Im Haus ist alles was man braucht, wir wollten es so wenig wie möglich ver­lassen, so aus­ser­or­dentlich schön und pri­vi­le­giert war unser Auf­enthalt. Mille grazie, Giacomo!

We were two people and visited the House in beginning of June. The House was perfect and very beau­tiful, espe­cially the view and the garden with the private beach. As an architect myself I really enjoyed the details of the building and the sur­roun­dings.
Giacomo was very nice and helpful and took really good care of us.
Tipp: Try the homemade Limon­cello from the neighbor Rosario.

Villa Capo Zaf­ferano

When you happen to arrive at Villa Capo Zaf­ferano you already by the gate know that an architect with an extra­or­dinary ima­ginary sen­si­bility has been at work. When slowly bringing your car to the end of the narrow spiral dri­veway from the street to the villa, you find a smaller but similar spiral staircase leading up to a plas­tered pass running all the way to the end of the land behind the house. Sur­rounded by all kind of Medi­ter­ranean bushes and trees one get the imme­diate feeling that it was the architect’s earnest purpose to cut off a chaotic world when you finally arrive at Villa Capo Zaf­ferano.

Met by Giacomo Barraja — the son of the Architect of Villa Capo Zaf­ferano Armando Barraja — you soon get to know that you have arrived in a place with a soul and that Giacomo with a passion has set out to con­serve his father’s visionary archi­tec­tural heritage for yet another gene­ration!

Entering the house through the walled cour­tyards ending up in the living room you imme­diately are con­fronted with the scenery through the big living room window in which the horizon of an immensely blue Tyr­rhenian Sea and a raising Capo Zaf­ferano ulti­m­ately draw you to the concave balcony. A balcony that stretch par­allel along the horizon and right at the point where the midday sun in zenith offer the dweller a cooling shadow for the rest of the day. The concave shape of the balcony seems to be swi­velling even the weakest ocean breeze smoothly around ones body and a thought imme­diately come to mind that you are embraced in the arms of nature — as if cap­tured by the arms of a giant octopus — and never will be released from this place again.

Giacomo explains that the lower level terrace — throwing a convex bow to the ocean — is thought for sun­ba­thers and the upper terrace for shadow lovers… of which his father as a Sicilian belongs to the last sim­patico category. You surely know by expe­rience what pre­cau­tions you will have to take having stayed in the house for a week! The amount of sun pro­tection creams needed for the convex terrace is immense — alt­hough the month of May 2019 was the coolest in Sicily for decades – and the concave balcony is a needed escape into a safe cave of shadow… Grilled by the sun un the lower deck for an hour your mind is in gra­titude to the architect Mr. Barraja and his shadowy balcony.

Strolling down to the private sea bath below the house is all in itself a sen­sa­tional journey awa­kening all your senses! Tracking between Agaves, Pine trees and a myriad of flowers releasing their sweet scent into the salty humid breeze of vapour from the breaking waves on the cliffs below… you are immersed in a pri­mordial natural world as Sicily must have been looking when the Phoe­ni­cians set their foot on Sicilian earth.
Arrived at the cliffs and the breaking waves it sud­denly becomes obvious that the cliffs churning up of the waves making floating islands of a delicate white foam must have been that foam from which Venus was born…non the less a Bot­ti­celli comes to mind.
Well, the clear salty water will spell­bound any swimmer and fearless diver even on a cold but clear afternoon in May. In the horizon the Aeolian Islands with Alicudi at the closest, then Filicudi, Salina and finally Lipari are dis­ap­pearing in a bluish vapour.

Looking up to the villa from the seaside below you cer­tainly become aware of the archi­tec­tural vision — that of classic modernism. A modernism that might be drawing its inspi­ration from the likes of a Frank Lloyd Wright, Alvar Alto and even­tually a breath of Carlo Scarpa. But Mr Giacomo Barraja is not to put into a refe­rential modernist pattern; his archi­tec­tural voca­bulary is visible down to the smallest con­s­tructive detail and up to the pro­por­tional rhythms of modular units from floor to wall and light ope­nings… inside and outside. In this villa you recall the love for Euclidian geo­metry and that repeating pattern of the Arabian world blended by the light and shadow in spaces of the nor­mannic purists … a sigh of Sicilian history?
At a second glance on the villa the two side­wards’ bridges sud­denly reminds us of the good old ocean liners that might have inspired Gropius or Rietveld with their iron fenced bal­conies. The one side pointing at the Capo and the other pointing unob­s­tructed towards eternity! Well we can’t get closer to the ocean and the view into eternity…. the architect truly sends us on a journey.
We think this archi­tec­tural work by Mr. Barraja is worth much more respect and attention beyond the horizon of the Tyr­rhenian Sea!

For a Designer at a certain age the small coll­ection of modernist fur­niture inha­biting the interior of the house — appro­xi­m­ately from the same time as the house was build — must be a pleasing déjà vu for any con­noisseur of modern design alt­hough the salty wind has taken its toll on some of the objects. But never the less it hasn’t obs­tructed this pleasant feeling of meeting good old friends…such as Panton – Breuer – Sapper – and even a couple of Danese vases even­tually designed by Enzo Mari. But what might be much more inte­resting the wooden chaise longue belonging to the Barraja family since the 1920ies is defi­nitely an amazing object of unknown origin apart from the inspi­ra­tional influence of a Char­lotte Perriand’s aes­thetic voca­bulary.
No, the Villa Capo Zaf­ferano is not a museum but a house respectfully lived by second gene­ration. The walls with small and screwed traces of gimmick gifts that doesn’t fit a desi­gners aes­thetic values, but what anyhow mimics life as it is lived with a family of dif­ferent ori­en­ta­tions in life.

For the gourmet afi­ci­onada — who doesn’t want to visit noisy family restau­rants — the kitchen and its utensils have seen better days! A con­tem­porary dweller with an affection for dining home on a warm summers night in front of the spec­ta­cular view of nightly fisher boats could hope for an assortment of the good and sophisti­cated designs of all the famous Italian kit­chenware brands…the list of desi­gners and brands are long and exem­plified by the same high quality as the villa’s archi­tecture.

The Sicilian summer — according to Giacomo — stretch from May to October and Giacomo owes all that support archi­tecture and nature lovers can offer to keep an important archi­tec­tural heritage alive. Villa Capo Zaf­ferano is a place with a soul and a place to explore all your senses!

Ich habe 2018 den ganzen Monat Juli in der Villa am Capo Zaf­ferano ver­bringen dürfen und dort mit Familie und Freunden einen wun­der­schönen und ent­spannten Urlaub genossen.

Capo Zaf­ferano liegt ca. 12 km von Palermo ent­fernt. Das Haus erreicht man am besten mit dem Auto, öffent­lichen Verkehr gibt es nicht. Innerhalb von 40min gelangt man mit dem Auto in Palermos Zentrum, mit dem Zug sind es ab dem Bahnhof von Bag­heria (10min Auto­fahrt ab Haus) sind es ungefähr 15 Minuten.
Das Kap wird von Feri­en­häusern domi­niert, Hotels gibt es kaum. Dem­entspre­chend sind auch die angren­zenden Orte Aspra und Sant’ Elia wenig tou­ris­tisch und glück­li­cher­weise noch sehr authen­tisch. Ita­lianità lässt sich hier mit all ihren Facetten erleben.

Die Villa liegt zusammen mit zwei anderen Häusern der Familie Barraja auf einem wun­der­schönen weit­läu­figen Grund­stück an der Steil­küste mit direktem Meer­zugang über eine kleine private Bade­stelle. Die Fels­küste wird von der impo­santen Erhebung des Caps Zaf­ferano domi­niert, dessen Begehung (ca. 30min bergauf) loh­nenswert ist. Der Garten ist sehr gepflegt, es gibt unzählige Plätze mit oder ohne Schatten zum Ver­weilen und das Leben spielt sich primär draussen ab. Der Ort ist magisch, all­ge­gen­wärtig ist das Meer – man ver­bringt die meiste Zeit mit seiner Betrachtung. Das per­ma­nente Rau­schen der Brandung hat mir nach meiner Rückkehr noch lange gefehlt.

Das Haus ist sehr schön in die Land­schaft ein­ge­passt und besticht durch seine sorg­fältig gestal­teten Aus­sen­räume und die Insze­nierung der Blicke. Die redu­zierte Archi­tektur hat uns gut gefallen, zudem über­zeugte die aus­ge­zeichnete natür­liche Lüftung des Hauses. Die Aus­stattung des Hauses ist — anders als es von den sty­li­schen Photos her zu erwarten ist — eher zwanglos, was im Neben­ein­ander von sehr schönen Design­klas­sikern und her­kömm­lichen Gebrauchs­möbeln begründet ist. Es lässt sich deshalb sehr gut Bespielen und bietet ohne Pro­bleme bis zu 9 Per­sonen Platz. Die 5 Schlaf- und 4 Bade­zimmer sind aller­dings nicht alle gleich­wertig und weisen auf­grund ihrer Lage und Aus­stattung unter­schied­liche Qua­li­täten auf. Aller­dings sind die Auf­ent­halts­räume dafür umso spek­ta­ku­lärer.

Das Anwesen ist eigentlich so schön, dass man es gar nicht ver­lassen möchte. Wir haben uns in diesem Monat deshalb primär selbst ver­sorgt und sind letzt­endlich wenig aus­wärts essen gegangen. Der tolle Fisch­markt in Aspra, der Gemü­se­händler und Super­markt in Sant’ Elia und die unzäh­ligen Stras­sen­händler bieten so viele Anreize, die Küche zu benutzen oder einfach den Grill im Garten ein­zu­heizen. Zudem lässt sich diese exklusive Lage einfach nicht toppen, so dass wir die meisten Abende auf der Ter­rasse gelandet sind.

Äussert dankbar bin ich für die grosse Gast­freund­schaft und Unter­stützung, die wir von der Eigen­tü­mer­fa­milie Barraja, aber auch vom Nachbarn Rosario, der sich um Haus und Garten kümmert, erfahren haben: Sie haben sich äus­serst viel Zeit genommen, uns mit Hin­ter­grund­in­for­ma­tionen und vielen Tipps ver­sorgt, so dass wir einen wun­der­schönen, indi­vi­du­ellen und sehr ein­drück­lichen Urlaub erleben durften. Wir kommen gerne zurück.

This Villa is amazing. Not only is the house itself a beau­tiful archi­tec­tural gem, the sur­rounding land­scape is breath­taking. You can walk around the garden and explore all the beauty that the natural land­scape of Sicily has to offer. Giacomo is a pleasure to work with and more than acco­mo­dating. We had sche­duled a pho­to­shoot at the Villa and he was more than helpful in giving us a tour of the villa and sur­rounding land­scape. I hope to come back soon!

Giacomo kennen wir schon länger, er war immer sehr fle­xibel, ent­ge­gen­kommend, klug und zuver­lässig.
Abge­sehen vom außer­ge­wöhn­lichen Haus hat uns die Lage gereizt — Ruhe und Meer etwas abseits von Palermo, kaum weiter als Mondello, aber viel ruhiger, und doch ist die Stadt ganz gut erreichbar. Das Kap ist auch schön — wir kennen es von Klet­ter­routen im Capo Zaf­ferano.
Alles in allem für die beschrie­benen Bedürf­nisse sehr zu emp­fehlen!

It is the second time for us at the villa. It is always amazing. The view is so beau­tiful. We can spend hours on the terrace just looking at the sea. The garden to the beach is so nice. We loved spending time on the rocks and swam in the beau­tiful seas. We came with our grand-mothers and they fell in love with the villa.
Giacomo is always so nice and helpful. He is a great man. Rosario , the gar­dener, is here when we need some­thing.
We love this place and for sure we will come back.

Wenn man die Ter­rasse der Villa das erste Mal betritt, kann man kaum fassen welch Aus­blick sich einem bietet. Die Aus­sicht aufs Meer ist atem­be­raubend, die private Bucht purer Luxus. Wir sind jeden Morgen zual­lererst schwimmen gegangen. Vom Wasser aus kann man das Bauwerk und die ganze Location in ihrer vollen Pracht bewundern. Die Villa der Familie ist geschmackvoll und mit Liebe fürs Detail ein­ge­richtet, die Ein­richtung dabei sehr apart. Dadurch fühlt man sich auch direkt hei­misch und nicht wie in einem typi­schen Feri­enhaus. Giacomo ist ein begna­deter Gast­geber. Er hat sich viel Zeit für uns genommen und uns eine Menge über die Geschichte des Hauses und die Umgebung erzählt. Leider waren mein Bruder und ich nur zwei Nächte am Capo Zaf­ferano (die rest­liche Familie hat eine Woche dort ver­bracht), gerne wäre ich länger geblieben.
Ich kann diese Unter­kunft wärmstens emp­fehlen und weiß jetzt schon, wo ich bei meiner nächsten Sizi­li­en­reise wohnen werde.

Lage — direkt am Meer.
Das Mee­res­rau­schen war die wun­der­volle Begleit­musik unserer Ferien. Baden im kris­tall­klaren Wasser vor der fel­sigen Bucht mit direkten Zugang — ein Traum.

Das Haus — wun­der­volle Archi­tektur. Ein Erlebnis. Jeden Tag ein Genuss.

Das Haus am Capo Zaf­ferano ist ein abso­luter Traum sowohl ästhe­tisch
als auch von der Lage.
Wir haben die Tage in diesem wun­der­vollen Haus sehr genossen.
Es strahlt eine impo­sante Ruhe aus und lässt einen, kaum dass man da ist,
allen Stress ver­gessen. Gleich­zeitig bietet das Haus und die Lage genug Abwechslung für die ganze Familie.
Giacomo ist ein groß­ar­tiger Gast­geber, der einem nicht nur die Geschichte des Hauses, sondern auch der Land­schaft sehr ein­drücklich schildert, so dass man gleich auf Erleb­nis­reise gehen möchte. Er und sein Team sind super-freundlich und hilfs­bereit.
Im nahe­ge­le­genen Dorf Aspra gibt es eine tolle Bar für café e cor­netto am Morgen und jeden Tag fri­schen Fisch direkt von den Fischern.
Überall sind alle Lebens­mittel dort frisch und von sen­sa­tio­neller Qua­lität.
Wir kommen auf jeden Fall wieder.
