Three houses, two locations, a different world: the former farmstead in the middle of the Steiner Alps was redesigned as a ‘scattered house’ and brought into the present day. A gentle interplay of contrasts.

Ferienhaus Alpine Contrapposto in Logarska Dolina / SI – Slovenia

Holiday home Alpine Contrapposto

Even though the farmstead hidden away in the remote Matkov Kot valley appears at first glance to be an ordinary mountain dwelling, it quickly becomes clear that something is not quite right here: the contrast between the dark wood and the white masonry is too striking, the windows of the main building are too precisely set, and the roof seems to almost float. Even in front of the farm building, the supports seem a little oversized, and then there is the concrete base on which the granary rests. Small, subtle disruptions that give the historic farmstead, where farmers and shepherds once lived, a modern twist.

The three-part, south-facing ensemble is located on a slope that stretches like a hammock across the high alpine landscape, surrounded by forests and high peaks. In winter it is white, in summer a green carpet of flowers and light. All around, hills wind in all directions. A place that seems to withdraw from the outside world simply because of its geography – a base for tranquillity and mountain adventures. When Otmar Kugovnik discovered the centuries-old, abandoned farmstead by chance on a ski tour and felt a deep connection to this special place in the Slovenian Alps, the Alpine Contrapposto took its course.

The renovation was planned over many years in collaboration with Rok Žnidaršič from the Medprostor architectural firm in Ljubljana. Demolition was out of the question; instead, the aim was to preserve the rich natural and cultural heritage and deliberately highlight the difference between the old structure and the new additions. In the spirit of a ‘scattered house’, each of the buildings was given a different function: the main house continues to serve as the centre of the estate and features a vaulted kitchen, an open-plan living and dining area with a fireplace and a view of the Jezero stream, a double bedroom with cosy wool futons and sheep’s wool rugs on the gallery, and a modern bathroom.

For even more relaxation, simply head to the next cottage, which is located directly next to a spring. Where grain was once stored for the winter, the granary now connects an indoor and outdoor pool with Alpine water, a larch wood sauna and a relaxation room on three levels.
The old two-storey barn with its modern supports is just a few steps further uphill and opens up a large, original room for individual use, a simple double bedroom and a flexible studio in the former stable, which can be used as an office, for workshops or team events.
