If you sit in a glass house, you’re in luck – at least at Gut Hornegg [Hornegg Estate]. Where the estate gardener once grew his plants, guests can now recharge their batteries. Under the glass construction from 1916, you are not only immediately at one with nature, but also experience a diverse spectrum of light and colours, as well as the occasional concert of raindrops. The old greenhouse at Spiegelsee is part of a historic estate in the Styrian hills at the foot of two vineyards. The family business, now in its fourth generation, still operates an organic fish hatchery and a farm.
The four siblings were already fascinated by the glass house when they were children, and so the idea to renovate it was born. Instead of plants, spacious living rooms with an open kitchen and fireplace fill the former greenhouse. Plain and simple, but very charming. The glass shell of the two holiday apartments offers a sense of security despite their transparency. The bedrooms are somewhat more secluded in the adjoining brick sections. A sauna house accessible via an open staircase can be used by the guests of both apartments. Each apartment has a patio and a meadow orchard in front of the door offers plenty of space for children to play. A small boat is available at the estate’s own natural swimming lake, and on the adjoining meadow you can enjoy the luxury of having the entire grounds exclusively to yourself.
Guests can buy fish, wine and home-made ice cream in the farm shop. The estate owners offer guided tours of the sustainable fish farm, and you can learn what the eleven different local freshwater species taste like. A little paradise for families, nature lovers, anglers and wine drinkers.
What to do
The ponds Großer Spiegelteich and Haselgrabenteich with swimming jetty, sunbathing lawn, canoe and a small island landscape are exclusively available to holiday guests. Mini wellness house with Finnish sauna and a hot stone couch. Holidaymakers can fish on the estate.
Styria is known for its culinary delights and lively cultural life. Possible activities: Visit to the Lipizzaner Stud, excursions to Riegersburg, open-air museum Stübing, Chocolate Factory. Near the Hornegg estate: nature trail at Lake Spiegelsee, organic farm Kappl, Pramergraben, bicycle tours. Trips to Graz an Slovenia.

Owner
Gut Hornegg is like a little world of its own. Four siblings in the fourth generation run an organic fish farm, viticulture, forestry and holiday apartments. And fortunately, they complement each other perfectly: Heinrich, farmer and conservationist, takes care of the fish, the wine and the sales, while Christiane, art historian and cookbook author, likes to cook occasionally for the guests and also runs the cultural programme at Gut Hornegg. It is fitting that cellist Meinhard offers an annual master class for highly talented young musicians from all over Europe. And – last but not least – carpenter and architect Marie-Theres is dedicated to the preservation of the estate and runs an in-house restoration workshop. All the siblings work together and look after the preservation of the historic buildings and the surrounding landscape with great dedication and enthusiasm.
