La Maison des Arènes is located in the historic centre of Arles in Provence. The ancient Roman city is one of the oldest cities in France and, with its many monuments and ancient treasures, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in the 17th century, the large townhouse is situated between the Roman Forum and the amphitheatre. Two Parisian architects renovated it while preserving many of its historical elements, staying true to the original. With rooms of a height of over four metres, arched windows, and stucco and wood-beam ceilings, its rooms radiate grandeur. The interior design breaks with the restraint of the architecture, featuring a skilful mix of antique pieces, vintage furniture and modern design paired combined with contemporary works of art and photographs. Textiles in bold colours set cheerful accents.
The house extends over four levels and offers 250 square metres of space for up to eight people. On the ground floor there is an impressive entrance hall and a bedroom with a living area and access to the garden. On the first floor you will find the living and dining room, the kitchen and a terrace. Three bedrooms are on the second floor. On the top floor there is a small summer kitchen, a sitting area and a roof terrace with a view over the historic old town.

We had a wonderful time in Arles. The beautiful and thoughtfully renovated patrician house in the middle of a quiet street in the centre of Arles is close to three good restaurants. It is also less than 5 minutes to the Arena, the Amphitheatre and other attractions.
Besides a well equipped kitchen you can cook in with ease, the house is furnished with elegant design classics, vintage furniture and antiquities. It also has a small garden, a big patio and a sunroof with a beautiful view over the city of Arles.
There are four big bedrooms which makes it the perfect place to stay with friends and family.
The host is friendly, easy to reach and always had good tips for day trips in the area, such as the Camargue.

I stayed in the house a few times as guest of the owners. It’s one of the grandest houses in the city, a spacious set of rooms located right in the middle of this Roman city. The arena on one side, the forum on the other, with a great view of the city from the roof terrace. If you like culture, arts and especially photography, this is a perfect location with the cultural venues within a short walk and the villages of Provence a short driving distance away.
The Rencontres de la photographie in summer is possibly the most important photography exhibition in Europe. It occupies several historical buildings in the old city as well as the vast railway hangars just outside of the centre. You buy a pass and visit at your leisure. Nearby are the Parc naturel de la Camargue, the amazing medieval fortified town of Aigues-Mortes. The Mas de la Chassagnette is a great restaurant in the countryside.
