Mas le Clos Souris – near the small village of Fons sur Lussan in the southern French département of Gard – was once an artist’s residence. A Hungarian painter named Joseph Szabo lived and worked here in this 16th century farmhouse until his death in 2010. The present owners bought the nigh-ruined property in 2013. Through a renovation process that lasted 5 years, they have transformed it into a unique holiday home in which you can still sense the creative atmosphere.
The property consists of three units of different sizes that can all be connected but offer separate entrances. The old farmhouse (the Mas) sleeps eight adults and four children in four double rooms (each with its own en-suite bathroom) and an additional multipurpose room. The new, broad windows allow plenty of light into the house and – just like the modern kitchen – create an appealing contrast to the old building’s fabric. The dining room opens onto a private courtyard.
The loft has four bedrooms, all on the ground floor. On the upper floor – the former artist’s studio – there is a large living room with access to a 60 square metre terrace. Dutch designer Rikkert Paauw designed the extraordinary kitchen and its benches from antique furniture pieces.
“The Extension” is perfect for couples or families with two children. On the ground floor there is a kitchen with a dining area; a living room with a sleeping area for two people and a children’s room with a bunk bed are housed on the first floor. This section also has a terrace of about 30 square metres in size.
The large garden is available to all guests. It is divided into two zones: the area around the old farmhouse with mature fruit trees, a pool, deckchairs, hammocks and a trampoline – and a two hectare plot of wild nature.

Wir waren acht Tage mit unserer 7‑köpfigen Patchworkfamilie in der wunderbaren Old Mas. Genug Platz für sehr heterogene Interessen. Die stilvollste und aufmerksamste Einrichtung, die ich je in einem Ferienhaus hatte. Salzwasserpool, Boulebahn mit nächtlicher Beleuchtung, Trampolin, Fahrräder. Tolle Tipps von Siegrid für Restaurants und Weingüter. Ausflug zu den Wasserfällen zum Felsenspringen. Nimes, Avignon … Es war die perfekte Mischung. Ein toller Platz, angenehme Gastgeber, gute Kommunikation und 1,6 km entfernt im Dorf ein kleiner Laden mit allem, was es braucht. PERFEKT!!!!
