Melgaço Alvarinho Houses
The Melgaço Alvarinho Houses are two holiday homes situated among the vineyards of the Alto Minho region in northern Portugal. Clérigo House replaced a ruined 19th-century house but as the original building’s granite stones and roof tiles were reused in its restoration, the new building now resembles its predecessor from the outside. The interiors, however, are entirely modern in design. The new building, Vigotas House, located on the terrace below, echoes its neighbour with its similar cubature, but distinguishes itself by its modern façade constructed of fiber cement panels. Its vertical structure was inspired by the vine stocks of the surrounding vineyards. Closed on the entrance side, the house opens out with large windows facing the landscape on the opposite side. The hard exteriors of each houses are contrasted by an abundant use of wood in the interiors. Combined with purist furniture pieces, the timbers create warm and quiet ambience. Between the two buildings there is a wine cellar with rooms for wine tasting – almost completely hidden within the earth and featuring a green garden on top.
What to do
