High above the Atlantic Ocean, in the north-west of the Canary Island of La Palma, lies Puntagorda. A small village characterised by steep coastlines, species-rich vegetation and numerous almond trees that bloom spectacularly in spring. When the owners discovered the property on the edge of a wine-growing area above the village a few years ago, there was already a small bodega standing on it. The old cellar was replaced by a new building and transformed into a holiday home with both modern architecture and traditional elements. Surrounded by pine trees and sweeping panoramas as from the bird’s eye view.
The house features a solid construction with brick walls and a flat, cantilevered wooden roof. Inside, a well thought-out room layout ensures spaciousness: an open-plan cooking, dining and living area with a floating fireplace and floor-to-ceiling sliding windows opens up the house to the surroundings. The two bedrooms with double beds and a shower room are located at the rear of the house. To create more living space and an entrance with a small hallway, the technical and service room was relocated to the slope.
The owners’ vision was to create a tranquil space that picks up on its surroundings through its materials and translates them into a clear design. This intention is reflected in the high-quality joinery inside – from the slatted wood panelling to the kitchen and built-in cupboards to the bathroom furniture. All the wooden fixtures and fittings as well as the flooring in the bedrooms are made of oak. The original stone walls of the property are also reflected in the interior. In the kitchen and bathroom in natural stone surfaces made of dolomite and floors inside and out in limestone.
The extended wooden roof provides shade on the spacious terrace, the pool seems to flow like a waterfall into the sea and the garden surprises not only with its variety of plants, but also with an additional sun deck and hidden spaces between the stone walls. On cooler days, the sauna awaits and in the evening a magnificent starry sky.
