Delicate cosmos, zinnias, dahlias, peonies and weeds – a wide variety of species and grasses transform the garden of Rooms & Blooms in the small hamlet of Kapenaker near Wormeldingen on the Moselle into a sea of flowers and colours. Slowflower is the name of the movement that promotes a more conscious approach to flowers. Local, seasonal, sustainable and toxin-free. A revived tradition that applies not only to the open spaces of Rooms & Blooms, but to the entire philosophy of the project: a former farm with one hectare of land outside Luxembourg City, which Stefanie and André Marxen-Hildebrand, together with the Berlin-based architectural firm Topotek 1, converted into a modern residential building with a guest house, slow flower farm and orchard for nature lovers.
Working in the garden was not only one of the first activities, it also served as inspiration for the design of the two houses, which were intended to preserve the spirit of the past and translate it into contemporary architecture.
In order to preserve the continuity of the surroundings, the buildings follow the original floor plan and a simple, archetypal form. This also applies to the holiday home, the outbuilding of the farm complex, which was rebuilt as a wooden structure: the exterior is clad in rough-sawn regional larch, while the interior is clad with large-format maritime pine panels. Designed on one level, it offers space for up to five people (70 m2) with two double bedrooms, a large open-plan living room with dining table, sofa and stove, a kitchen and an age-appropriate bathroom. The bright rooms with windows and passageways opposite each other are as fluid in design as the garden itself. Even the sliding doors disappear into the walls. The furnishings also emphasise simplicity and beauty, creating a calm and relaxed atmosphere.
In the garden room, you wake up to a view of the flower fields, the courtyard room reflects the sociable side of the house, and in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows, guests can enjoy a small wooden veranda with deck chairs for watching the flowers. The specially designed garden in front of the holiday home was modelled on that of artist and director Derek Jarman in Dungeness. Whether you spend your days enjoying the view of the garden, immersing yourself in the art of slow flower farming with the owner, or exploring the region and nearby Luxembourg is up to you. Here, guests can enjoy a wide range of possibilities in a relaxed setting.

We absolutely loved it!
I can’t recommend Rooms and Blooms in Kapernacker enough! The flower farm is absolutely breathtaking, and there’s nothing more peaceful than waking up surrounded by the scent of fresh blossoms. The house itself is warm, inviting, and perfectly sized for a family— a true countryside haven.
