Located between the Riviera of the Palms and the foothills of the Maritime Alps, the medieval town of Noli, with its winding streets, Gothic palaces and proud towers, is one of the select circle of ‘I borghi più belli d’Italia’ – Italy’s most beautiful places. As an important ally of Genoa, the small maritime republic experienced a golden age in the late Middle Ages, the splendour of which is still reflected in the town today. Of the approximately 70 towers that once symbolised the wealth and political power of the noble families, only four remain at their original height. The Torre Ganduglia is one of these special exceptions and is the only family tower in Noli that is privately owned.
Just 150 metres from the public beach, in a quiet side street between the main square and the cathedral, the former 13th-century residential and defensive tower now houses a holiday apartment. Its highlight is the roof terrace of the 24-metre-high tower, which offers a spectacular panoramic view over the roofs of the old town.
As the defensive and residential towers only grew together over the centuries, the result is a diverse spatial structure with exciting transitions that turn the old walls into a history book: in the 16th century, the crenellated tower was not only extended to include a living area with a living room and three bedrooms, but also raised. The former swallowtail battlements can still be glimpsed beneath the plaster in the bathroom. The floral wall and ceiling paintings in the living rooms were only added in 1900 and were rediscovered and uncovered during the most recent renovation work. The stone floors are original and the colours of the doors and windows reflect the historical appearance.
The newly designed kitchen now connects the living area with the fortified tower and forms a modern contrast to the thick tower walls and vaulted ceilings. From the kitchen, you can reach the roof terrace via a terrace shaded by vine leaves or a filigree steel staircase. Passing a tower room with additional sleeping space, a small TV room and a reading room with selected literature. If it weren’t for the sea and the dolce vita of the small harbour town, one would never want to leave the tower residence with its magnificent view.
What to do
Swimming and bathing in the sea, diverse hiking routes through the coastal mountains (e.g. to Capo Noli), nearby Finale Ligure and Noli are a paradise for mountain bikers and climbers, various water sports, boat trips, discovering the sights of the old town and the delicacies of Ligurian cuisine, as well as excursions to the coastal region.

When Peter Omachen's parents bought the charming but renovation-needy old town apartment in 1989, the current owner was still an architecture student. After some initial simple repairs, many family holidays spent by Peter, his wife Annette and their three children, and regular cleaning of the pigeon-infested tower, the flat was professionally and comprehensively renovated and modernised over a period of ten years. A dream come true, which also offers its guests the best views and new perspectives.

Kurz nach der Veröffentlichung auf URLAUBSARCHITEKTUR haben wir uns Torre Ganduglia ergattert, um unsere Flucht vor dem erfahrungsgemäß schlechten Februar-Wetter in Deutschland an die Côte d’Azur um eine Woche nach Osten zu verlängern. Und wir haben es nicht bereut, einmal in einer anderen Art Ferienwohnung zu urlauben. Klar, die 54 Stufen zur “Basis” müssen bereits am Morgen für die frischen Brötchen ein erstes Mal bewältigt werden, aber irgendwie muss man dem Himmel bzw. der Plattform kurz davor ja näher kommen. Und wenn man sie fest ins tägliche Fitness-Programm einbaut, tun sie schnell auch nicht mehr weh.
Man erreicht eine hervorragend und mit viel Liebe und Sachverstand, bis hin zur dekormäßigen “auf-Putz-Installation” vom Vermieter streng und konsequent nach seiner Philosophie wiederhergestellte und ausgestattete Wohnung, in der auch “die Moderne” ihren Teil dazu beiträgt, einen angenehmen und problemfreien Urlaub zu erleben.
An einigen Wandflächen ist sehr gut erkennbar, wie arglos früher mittelalterliche Architektur behandelt, wie sie verändert wurde. Und so erwischt sich der Berufskollege immer wieder bei Überlegungen, wie das mit den Türmen wohl auch innerhalb der Wohnung ausgesehen haben mag, schließlich haben fast alle Räume die gleichen, dem Turm ähnliche Grundflächen.
Zur Besteigung des Turms empfiehlt sich “leichtes Gepäck” und nichts zu vergessen — Tablet, Flasche Wein, Glas und Korkenzieher sollten ausreichen — und für den Transport auf jeden Fall den freundlicherweise bereitgestellten Korb zu verwenden. Man hält sich auf der sehr filigran befestigten und pfiffigen Treppe, ein sehr schöner Kontrast zum rohen Turm-Mauerwerk, schon gerne an ihren Abhängungen fest. Oben angekommen erlebt man den aha-Moment, blickt über die Dächermeer des Städtchens aufs Mittelmeer und wünscht sich im Februar dort etwas mehr Verkehr. Man bewundert mit Begeisterung und Respekt den benachbarten wesentlich höheren Turm, auf den man aber eigentlich zu Fuß gar nicht rauf will!
Wieder unten angekommen haben wir uns die Terrasse vor Wohnzimmer und Küche belaubt vorgestellt, im Sommer mit Stimmengewirr und Leben aus den Gassen darunter und waren uns einig: die meiste Zeit würden wir hier verbringen, wenn auch der Erde näher. Torre Ganduglia ist auf jeden Fall einen Besuch wert!
Wir sind schon viele Male entlang der ligurischen Küste gereist, aber noch nie haben wir in Noli angehalten! Was für einen Fehler! Jetzt sind wir dafür 10 Tage in der besten Ferienwohnung des Städtchens gewesen. Vom ersten Augenblick an total begeistert. Der Ort, die Gassen und Plätze — einfach zauberhaft und mitten drin die Wohnung mit dem fabelhaften Aussichtsturm. Man möchte gar nie mehr abreisen. Die Räume strahlen ein behagliches Klima aus, dank wunderschönen Böden, herrlich bemalten gewölbten Decken, den schönen alten Möbeln und dem Ausblick in alle vier Himmelsrichtungen. Hübsch, der Sitzplatz auf dem Terrässchen, schon im Februar zum draussen Sitzen. Und der abenteuerliche Aufstieg zum Turm. Die Aussicht ist grandios, zu jeder Tages- und Nachtzeit. Mitten drin und doch über allem! Hier konnten wir gut abschalten fern ab vom Kleinkram. Unvergessliche Ferienzeit. Herzlichen Dank an Peter Omachen und Familie.
Das Wohnen im Turm ist in jeglicher Hinsicht spektakulär, man weiß garnicht wo man anfangen soll zu schwärmen. Bei der wunderbaren Restaurierung, die frühere Deckengemälde aus dem 19. und Anbauten aus dem 17. Jahrhundert freigelegt hat oder bei der liebevollen Möblierung und Ausstattung der Wohnung mit allen historischen und modernen Details (der Küchentisch mit integriertem Nudelholzfach hat es uns besonders angetan) und Annehmlichkeiten oder bei der unglaublich stylischen Metalltreppenkonstruktion, die mit 50 Stufen zu einer Aussicht führt, die einen einfach nur staunen lässt.
Der Blick über die Dächer der Altstadt auf die schöne Meeresbucht ist unbeschreiblich.
Wir hatten Sonnen- und Regenzeiten und haben jede Stunde im Turm und im hübschen mittelalterlichen Städtchen genossen.
Luogo magnifico in un centro storico singolare tra montagna e mare. Spiaggia vicino all’abitazione molto comodo. Possibilità di escursioni e mare. L’abitazione affascina per l’originalità degli interni nel quale moderno e antico si sposano perfettamente. Molto vicino a Savona e Genova offre molte possibilità di visite culturali e relax. La Torre Ganduglia ti offre una vista veramente speciale circondata dai monti e vista mare immensa difficile da dimenticare. Ciao Noli arrivederci
