Just a 15-minute walk from the town centre and yet light years away from the daily hustle and bustle, Szegzárd – the lodge offers a special retreat in one of Hungary’s oldest and most renowned wine regions. The estate, comprising several individual buildings, is spread across the extensive hillside plot and, in addition to the vineyard, includes its own woodland and an orchard with over a hundred trees.
To disrupt this established landscape as little as possible, the Budapest-based architectural practice építész.stúdió has designed the buildings – with their gently sloping roofs and distinctive wooden slats – to blend seamlessly into the topography and its agricultural heritage: The three main buildings – two holiday homes and a wine cellar for tastings – follow the natural contours of the slope and are staggered in such a way as to preserve privacy and intimacy, whilst at the same time offering views of the valley.
The concrete plinths, combined with the light-feeling timber structure, give the buildings a sense of grounding, whilst large windows and covered terraces open up the interiors to the outside and expand them. Although the sleeping areas and bathrooms are separated from the living spaces, there are no rigid boundaries, only fluid transitions between indoors and outdoors. The furnishings, curated by the owner Peter Dudas himself, are light, clean and understated.
The smaller holiday home, Lodge #1, is a retreat for up to four people, with one bedroom and a sofa bed in the living room. Lodge #2 accommodates up to six people. Here, the two bedrooms are separated from the large, open-plan living area by the sheltered terrace.
The outdoor areas of both lodges also feature an outdoor kitchen. On warm days, or to cool off, there is a swimming pool with a sun deck. On cooler evenings, the crackling and popping of the open fire provides a cosy backdrop to time spent together. Alternatively, after long walks, guests can warm up again in the Finnish sauna in the woods or in the shared hot tub. Another highlight is the on-site wine cellar, which is open to guests for tastings and an exploration of the world of regional wines.
What to do
Wine tastings at our own vineyard or at one of the many local wineries, walking or cycling amongst the vineyards (e-bikes can also be hired on site), bathing, swimming and sauna sessions, canoeing, relaxing in the garden swing; for children, there’s a treehouse at the edge of the forest; private dining (on request) or taking part in various workshops, such as truffle hunting
