Some places remain true to their magic. As early as the late 19th century, painters, musicians and wealthy city-dwellers were drawn to the Bavarian Ammersee for their summer retreats. The sweeping view across the lake, with the silhouette of the Alps visible beyond on clear days. Fantastic! A view that still delights, rejuvenates and inspires mountain and lake enthusiasts to this day. And not just in summer. On the western shore of the lake, in the small village of Schondorf, architect Josef Högenauer has set two holiday homes within the Five Lakes landscape, lending this idyllic spot a new form and colour.
Even from a distance, you can see two slender, ruby-red structures, situated in a quiet residential area above the lake. It is a rich, vibrant red that envelops the metal façade like a second skin, as if someone had just given two boathouses a fresh coat of paint. And indeed, this is the origin of the design, albeit interpreted in a radically modern way: two rectangular floor plans, two open gables, the design language reduced to the essentials. Adjacent to them, in the same design language, is a double garage.
Beneath the metal cladding lies solid timber. The range of materials is strictly limited to just two: timber and steel. Nothing distracts the eye; nothing is merely decorative. Inside, the space opens out across two levels, connected by an open-plan gallery that makes the interior airy and flooded with light. The large windows literally bring the lake and the mountains into the living room.
In keeping with the boathouses on Lake Ammer, the floor plan of the Seeberg houses is also compact – 80 square metres, three bedrooms, one bathroom, an open-plan kitchen, a living area and a spacious terrace. And yet there is plenty of space and privacy for up to six people. This is complemented by a few interior accessories that provide the odd touch of contrast. The best way to start the day is on the terrace, watching the sun rise over the eastern shore. The plot itself is situated on a slight incline and slopes gently down to the lake, which is just a few steps away. The garden is peaceful and uncluttered, with plenty of little spots for sitting, barbecuing and relaxing – perfectly in keeping with houses that tolerate nothing superfluous.
What to do
Swimming and bathing (there is a lido on the shores of Lake Schondorf), sailing, surfing, walking, cycling, mini-golf; there is a pirate’s playground for children nearby, the steamboat jetty is also not far away, and there are plenty of beer gardens where you can stop for a drink; day trips to the Five Lakes Region, to Munich, Weilheim or Augsburg (either by train or car)
Why we like this house
A house that focuses on the essentials whilst radiating a great zest for life – from its bright red exterior to the light, flowing woodwork.
