One hotel, ten rooms. This historic townhouse in the centre of Dornbirn, once a patisserie, café and residential property, is now the BAR10ZIMMER. The owners’ passion for unique hotels and architecture has given rise to a place that blends impressions from their many travels with the architecture and building culture of Vorarlberg.
The renovation was carried out with respect for the existing structure and with as few alterations as possible. The original building structure, historic windows and doors, and the proportions of the house have been largely preserved and supplemented only where functionally necessary. The character of the old townhouse is also evident from the outside: white-plastered façades, folding shutters, the historic entrance portal and the steep gable roof define its appearance. New elements blend in discreetly.
Bright rooms, natural materials, carefully selected furniture and a changing selection of artworks characterise the ten rooms. White and light wood tones set the tone, whilst bespoke fitted furniture provides storage and seating without dominating the spaces. The furnishings are simple and of high quality, without overshadowing the character of the house. The layout has also been largely retained: each room is unique and derives its character from the existing building structure. Typographic wall inscriptions add individual design accents.
The name BAR10ZIMMER refers to the building’s history and the ground floor’s former use as a bar and restaurant. Today, the French bakery Copain opens the building up to the town. In the mornings, the coffee machine is on; when the sun shines, chairs are set out in front of the building – and so the place becomes a lively meeting point for visitors and locals alike.
BAR10ZIMMER combines the atmosphere of an old townhouse with a consistently minimalist design. Inside, it remains uncluttered and peaceful; outside, city life begins. And surrounding Dornbirn lie Karren and the Rappenloch Gorge, the Bregenzerwald and Lake Constance – a diverse landscape within a compact area.
