Just over 10 years ago, the Biohotel Pausnhof in the Bavarian Forest National Park became the first German hotel to be certified organic. Ecological sustainability pervades all areas of this sylvan retreat: from the design of the rooms, to the cuisine, the wellness activities and, of course, the garden.
The interiors were created by designer, carpenter and artist Franz Hafner, who made use of natural, regional materials. The flooring and furniture are made of Bavarian Forest wood. The bathrooms are tiled with Solnhofen Natural Stone. And the ingredients used by Biohotel Pausnhof’s chefs come from the hotel’s own farm or those of the region. The newly designed spa area features several saunas, a steam bath, a warm saltwater outdoor pool and a natural swimming pool. The garden creates a modern contrast to the historic farmhouse and its two guesthouses. The pool, which is framed by a wooden deck, is shielded by a concrete wall. The traditional cottage garden has been reinterpreted in a contemporary style with linearly designed surfaces and modern raised beds.
